Notes
In England's first ever official football match in 1872,
the University team provided three of its players. Fred Chappell, Arnold
Smith and Cuthbert Ottoway started in England's first historic match against
Scotland, 30 November 1873.
Another three featured 22 years later on three separate
occasions. George Raikes, Bill Oakley and Gilbert Smith started against
Wales, 18 March 1895, against Ireland, 7 March 1896 and against Wales, 16
March 1896.
