Diary

Thursday, 26 August 2021, 2.00pm - Gareth Southgate's names his 26 man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Hungary, Andorra and Poland. It includes a first call-up for Leeds United's forward Patrick Bamford, and recalls for Manchester United's Jesse Lingard and Burnley's Nick Pope.

Monday, 30 August 2021 - As the England squad turn up to St. George's Park, they do so without Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has remained with his club suffering from a thigh injury sustained inerton's win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. He will not be replaced.

Wednesday, 1 September 2021 - After another training session, the England team leave for Budapest.

Thursday, 2 September 2021 - Hungary 0 England 4 - England consolidated their position of power in pursuit of a place at next years World Cup in Qatar with a hugely impressive victory over Hungary in a hostile and unsavoury atmosphere in Budapest. They made it four wins from four qualifying matches to open up a five-point lead over Poland. Raheem Sterling crowned a smooth move involving Declan Rice, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount to slide home his sixteenth goal in his last 24 appearances. Sterling then turned provider as his deflected cross sat up perfectly for Kane to head home. Harry Maguire added a third with another header, this time from a Luke Shaw corner that slipped through the grasp of the goalkeeper. England's night was then rounded off when another goalkeeping error gifted England a fourth goal after he allowed Declan Rice's shot under his body.

Friday, 3 September 2021 -
FIFA is investigating racial abuse aimed at England players during last night's victory in Budapest. Sterling and unused substitute Jude Bellingham were both targeted. England condemned the abuse as 'completely unacceptable'. Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged FIFA 'to take strong action against those responsible.' Despite UEFA ordering Hungary to play three home games behind closed doors after fans' discriminatory behaviour during Euro 2020, fans were allowed in last night because the match fell under FIFA's jurisdiction. The England players were booed as they took a knee before the match to protest against racism. Racist chants were heard during the match and paper cups and bottles were being thrown at the England players throughout the match, and a flare was thrown after England went 3-0 up. Gareth Southgate was then pelted with ice during post-match interviews.
As FIFA open disciplinary proceedings following racist abuse, the England team return and set up in Tottenham Hotspur FC Training Ground in Enfield.

Saturday, 4 September 2021 - Jadon Sancho has returned to his club, Manchester United FC, after withdrawing from the squad. The forward picked up a minor knock in training earlier in the week. He is expected to recover in time for the return of the Premier League next weekend. Gareth Southgate will not replace him and will have a 23-man squad for the matches against Andorra and Poland.

Tuesday, 7 September 2021 - The 22-man England squad travel to Warsaw this afternoon. Tyrone Mings returns to his club after being ruled out of the match with Poland because of suspension.

Wednesday, 8 September 2021 - England's players were booed for taking the knee before players from both sides were dragged into a furious scuffle after the half-time whistle was blown, caused by Kamil Gilk grabbing Kyle Walker's throat. Both Glik and Harry Maguire were cautioned after the row. FA officials Emily Webb, the team manager, and Tony Conniford, head of security, were among those who accused Kamil Gilk of making a racist remark or gesture towards Walker, complaining to the fourth official, Daniel Schlager, who then lodged it with FIFA's match commissioner. Witness statements were taken and it was decided that the game should continue.

Wednesday, 13 October 2021 - FIFA will take no disciplinary action over the confrontation between Kyle Walker and Kamil Glik due to lack ofidence. Both associations were asked for their observations on the incident by FIFA, which has decided there is insufficientidence to open proceedings.
