Sunday, 18 March 2001 - Coach Sven-Göran Eriksson summoned a 26-player squad for the World Cup 2002 preliminary matches against Finland at Anfield Road in Liverpool on Saturday, 24 March and Albania at Qemal Stafa Stadium in Tirana on Wednesday, 28 March.  

Saturday, 24 March 2001 - The squad entered the Finland match intact, having incurred no injury withdrawals, and the players apparently emerged unscathed from the 2-1 victory.

Sunday, 25 March 2001 - The England coaching staff, after taking medical advice, sent home Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, who played the full 90 minutes against Finland yesterday and awoke this morning suffering from back soreness, one of several recurring problems he has had in coping with the physical demands of the game, apparently because his bone growth has outstripped his muscle growth.  The withdrawal had been anticipated since Gerrard's physical problems have often prevented him from playing consecutive games within a few days of each other for his club side.
