A different black shirt appeared during the 2004 European Championship and was worn with the shorts and socks from the 2003 all-black kit, which had been worn in the opening game of the tournament, against France.

Although it had the correct logos sewn onto the arms, and the match fixture and date in white in the middle of the chest, the emblem was only printed in white. On all other England kits, up to this point, the emblem had been rendered in red, white and blue. The other main differences were the two white stripes down each arm and the absence of red on the shirt.

It appears to have been a late replacement, because Croatia's red and white chequered sleeves clashed with the large red patches on the sleeves of the 2003 black shirt. The shirt was from Umbro's 'x-static' range and was probably a modified training shirt. The tournament patches were placed over the 'x-static' logos which would not have been allowed to be displayed during a game.

The number-22 shirt above was issued to Ian Walker, an unused substitute for the game. It is part of Richard Clarke's 'Three Lions - England Match Worn Shirts' Facebook Collection. The first two photos (top left) are courtesy of Tim Gwinnett.
