Description
	Red long-sleeved shirt with crew neck. Embroidered emblem on left breast and white number on back in standard Umbro font. Ink stamp of the SPORTSWEAR by UMBRO THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS logo in navy blue on right hip. White shorts and red socks.
Variations	In the last four matches in which this shirt was worn, England wore a font with a slight typographical difference, in that the number one reverted to a simple rectangular bar, as it was on the home white shirt. On occasion, the SPORTSWEAR by UMBRO THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS logo was positioned on the back of the shirt, low to the right-hand side. Against Belgium, England wore an alternative pair of plain red shorts.
Most Appearances	8 - Alan Ball, Bobby Moore 6 - Sir Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters (1 sub) Bob McNab (as a substitute) and Peter Osgood were the only players to win their first cap in this shirt. Both won three more. Ace marksman, Jimmy Greaves made his 57th and last appearance for England in this shirt, against Austria in 1967, after missing out on the shirt's most famous appearance, ten months earlier. Cyril Knowles also won his last cap in the shirt, his fourth.
Scorers	5 - Sir Geoff Hurst 3 - Alan Ball 1 - Martin Chivers, Roger Hunt, Martin Peters No players scored their first England goal in the shirt, but Sir Geoff Hurst scored his 24th and last international goal against Greece in 1971. Three of his five goals comprised the hat-trick against West Germany in 1966, the first player ever to score three goals in a World Cup Final. Peters' goal was England's second in the World Cup Final and would have been the winner but for Weber's last-minute equaliser.
Captain	8 - Bobby Moore This shirt was only ever worn as captain by Bobby Moore, and he will always be associated with the country's finest moment, receiving the Jules Rimet Trophy from the Queen, and wearing the iconic red shirt.
The classic image of plain red shirts, white shorts and red socks is forever associated with a certain July afternoon at Wembley in 1966 when an epic encounter with West Germany was etched into the nation's memory. This kit incorporated England's first crew-neck red shirt and established itself as the second-choice outfit in the wake of the national team's finest hour. In 1970 and 1974, a short-sleeved version appeared in Aertex material to help the players cope with games played in hot climates, but the World Cup-winning long sleeves made two farewell appearances in the 1971-72 season in England's European Championship campaign, fittingly bowing out in West Germany. The number-six shirt pictured above was worn by the late, great Bobby Moore, sadly, not in THAT game, but against Austria in 1967. Nevertheless, it is a magnificent link to a unique moment in English football history and an essential part of the National Football Shirt Collection at the England Match Shirts website (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
