Captains

1 - Ray Clemence, Peter Shilton

  • Goalkeepers captaining the side were extremely rare up until this point, but the games against Brazil and the Netherlands offered opportunities for England's two experienced custodians. Ray Clemence was the fifth England captain of the 1980-81 season, following in the footsteps of Phil Thompson, Mick Mills, Kevin Keegan and Dave Watson, but he was England's first goalkeeping captain since Frank Swift in 1948. It was a once-only honour.

  • Peter Shilton was captain the following year for the first of 15 occasions.

This new version of the 1976 blue jersey was subtly altered in order to match with the yellow-trimmed black shorts and socks of the 1974 yellow goalkeeper's kit. Out went the red, white and blue edgings to the sleeves and in came yellow and black edgings in their place.

Ironically, this change coincided with the Admiral logo changing from yellow to red, white and blue!

The jersey above belonged to Joe Corrigan and is part of the Neville Evans Collection at www.englandmatchshirts.com. Photo kindly supplied by Simon Shakeshaft.
