Club Career

Club(s) Signed for Newcastle United FC from their youth system on 11 March 1991, but made just sixteen league appearances, before he signed for Bolton Wanderers FC for £250,000 on 22 July 1993. He scored 37 goals in 157 league appearances. On to Aston Villa FC for £4½ million on 5 June 1998. After just 46 Premier League appearances, with a return of four goals, Thompson left for The Celtic FC for £2¾ million on 1 September 2000. He scored 37 times in 158 SPL appearances, before he fell out of favour and was loaned to Leeds United AFC on 12 January 2007, his two goals in eleven league outings earned him a permanent contract on 9 August 2007, when he was awarded the club captaincy. He scored another three in thirteen league outings. He joined Hartlepool United FC on loan in January 2008 for a month, where he scored once in seven league appearances. Announced his retirement on 28 May 2008 at the age of 34;

Beyond England

Took up a variety of coaching roles. On 16 July 2008, Thompson was appointed as the new academy coach at Newcastle United FC. The following season, 2009-10, he became the club's Reserve Team coach. He left United on 4 June 2010. Became the First Team coach at The Celtic FC on 17 June, until he was sacked on 3 June 2012. Between June and October 2014, Thompson was the Development Squad coach at Birmingham City FC.
