 This navy blue kit,
generously edged with red, stuck around
for over two years, either side of the 1998 World Cup.
David Seaman's heroics at the 1996 European Championship had ensured
that he was the undisputed number one and he even managed to become
the first goalkeeping captain since Peter Shilton, when Alan Shearer
and Tony Adams were injured and Paul Ince was suspended. David James
became the first goalkeeper to wear the kit, making the first of 53
appearances over a 13-year period. The shirt in the photo top left,
was worn by Ian Walker in a B international against Russia at Loftus
Road, London on 21 April 1998.
It appears here by kind permission of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft). |
