Birth 23 September 1896 in Ryhope, County Durham [registered in Sunderland, December 1896].
 

According to the 1901 census, Owen is the third of fourth children to James and Mary Ann (née Quinn). They live at 77 Railway Street in Ryhope Colliery area of Sunderland. His father is a hewer in the coalmine.

 

None of the family can be found on the 1911 census.

Marriage to Dorothy Oliver [registered in Easington, County Durham, September 1918].
  According to the 1921 census, Owen is now a professional footballer (for Clapton Orient FC) and is now married to Dorothy and have one daughter Marion. They live with his parents and eight siblings at 93 Station Road in Easington Colliery.
According to Passenger Lists, 26 year-old George Clifford was part of the FA Tour that left Southampton bound for Quebec, Canada on 15 May 1926 on board the Empress of Scotland, they returned to Liverpool on 23 July 1926 on board the Montroyal. His address is stated as 3 Chipchase Street in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough.
  According to the 1939 register, Owen, a general dealer, and Dorothy are now married, and living at 13 Milton Lane in Easington, along with daughter, Marion.
Death 9 December 1960, aged 64 years 77 days [registered in Durham East, December 1960].

Playing Career

Club(s) Played schoolboy football in Sunderland before playing with his pit team, Ryhope Colliery FC. During which he had a trial with Sunderland AFC and signed amateur forms with Manchester United FC. Played with the Easington Colliery Welfare FC pit team from where he joined Clapton Orient FC in July 1919. After 162 league appearances and 33 goals, Williams returned north when Middlesbrough FC signed him in February 1924 for a £3000 transfer fee. He scored forty goals in 184 league appearances. In July 1930, Southend United FC took him back down south, and yet, a year later, after just sixteen league appearances in which he scored four goals, Shildon FC took him back north in September 1931.
