His father died on 4 May 1883.

 

According to the 1891 census, schoolboy Gilbert is the fifth of eight children living with their widowed mother on Hindhead Road in Godalming, with four servants and a nephew.

 

According to the 1901 census, 24 year old Gilbert is a schoolmaster with two servants living at The Lodge on Bardwell Road in Oxford.

His wife died on 9 March 1928.
