Obituary

"Our readers will be sorry to hear the death of a good all-round athlete, Mr F. B. Soden, of the London Athletic Club, who has, we regret to learn, passed away at the early age of 31. Mr Soden was a capital football player and cricketer, and by no means a bad sprinter, and all of the old school will miss his genial face at our principal athletic meetings. He was universally respected, and although some might describe his style of running as anything but elegant, he won several good races, and was never afraid to back his fancy, a trait in his character that may be looked upon by the 'unco guid' as a failing, but in our idea seemed a characteristic of what Mr Soden was—a true Englishmen." - Saturday, 21 April 1877, Bell's Life in London.
