Full name John William Smith
Born 28 October 1898 at 116 Staffords Lane, in Whitburn, County Durham [registered in South Shields, December 1898].

Census Notes

According to the 1901 census, John W. is the oldest of two children, both sons, to John W. and Matilda J. His father They live at 116 Staffords Lane in Whitburn. His father is a limestone quarryman.

 

According to the 1911 census, John W. has three more brothers. His father is still working in the limestone quarry, and they live at Wesley Terrace in Whitburn. The census also reveals that John was one of six children, and one had since died. They have one servant, John's cousin, Sophia WIlson.
According to Passenger Lists, John W. Smith was one of eighteen footballers on an FA Tour, courtesy of Canadian Pacific Railway Company, had left the port of Liverpool on 11 May 1931, bound for Montreal, Canada, on the Duchess of Richmond. They returned from Quebec, arriving at Southampton on 23 July 1931, on board the Empress of Britain. He was living at 28 Arthur Street in Whitburn.

 

Cannot be found on the 1939 register, but supposedly a licensee in Eastleigh.

Died 19 January 1977, aged 78 years 83 days [registered in Durham West, March 1977].
Height/Weight 5' 8½", 11st. 2lbs [1927]. 5' 7", 11st. 10lbs [1934].

Club Career

Club(s) Smith began his junior career with locla club Whitburn FC, from where he joined North Shields Athletic FC. In mid-1919, local League club South Shields FC paid a £5 transfer fee. After 261 Division Two appearances, Portsmouth FC, who had recently took Shields' manager, Jack Tinn, then signed Smith on 31 December 1927, and eventually becoming the club captain. He made 260 league appearances, scoring 62 goals, before he moved along the south coast on 1 May 1935 when Bournemouth & Boscombe AFC signed him. Joined Clapton Orient FC on 29 October 1936 as their new captain. He retired from playing when he was released from his contract on 17 February 1937, so he could concentrate on his business, a licensed house, in Eastleigh.

Individual honours Football League (two appearances)
Distinctions One of three footballing brothers, the others being Septimus (Leicester City FC), Tom (Leicester City FC) and Willy (South Shields FC & Portsmouth FC).
Jack and Tom played in the Durham County Cricket League with Whitburn CC in 1929. Jack then represented the City of Portsmouth CC in 1936.
