Birth 6 March 1892 in 1 Cliffe Road, Higham, Kent [registered as 'Birt', in Strood, Kent, March 1892]. Birthdate confirmed by the 1939 register.
 

According to the 1901 census, Bertie is the fourth of six children to William and Emily. His father is an engine driver and they are living at Wharf House in Charlton, London with his uncle and his family.

 

According to the 1911 census, Bert is a butcher's assistant, living at home with his parents and his elder sisters new family, and two of his younger siblings, at 87 Eastcombe Avenue, Charlton. His father is still an engine driver for the local council. The census reveals that his mother had eight children, and that two have died.

Marriage to Grace A.M. Pearce [registered in Ipswich, December 1917].
  According to the 1921 census, Bert, a professional footballer (for Tottenham Hotspur FC), is now married to Grace, and they live at 80 Paxton Road in Tottenham.
  According to the 1939 register, Bert, a football trainer, is married to Grace A.M. and living at 5 Whitehurst Avenue in Hitchin.
Death 12 September 1969, aged 77 years 191 days [registered in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, September 1969]. Confirmed by his ancestry, found by Bob Pickett.

Playing Career

Club(s) Started his junior football career in London with Vanbrugh Park FC and Crawford United FC. Also played with London Metropolitan Gas Works FC from where he was invited to join Huddersfield Town AFC on 29 April 1913 as a forward. He had scored eleven goals in his two trial matches with the reserves, eight in one mtach. He played football for the army after his enlistment. Afterwhich, he joined Tottenham Hotspur FC in 1919. Instead of leaving club after failing to break into the forward-line, he reverted to half-back and successfully remained until 1930, making 291 league appearances and still managed nine goals. He joined the Spurs' nursery club Northfleet FC as coach in May 1930. Returned to playing briefly with Sheppey United FC in October 1931. Became the player-coach at Swiss club Young Boys FC from 20 November 1931 until 1934.

After returning from Switzerland in 1934, Smith took up a manager-coach position at Harwich and Parkeston FC, before holding a similar appointment at Stevenage Town FC.
