Played schoolboy football in
Liverpool, before joining Bury FC as an apprentice, turning professional
in October 1969. After ninety league appearances and eight goals,
it was Newcastle United FC that signed McDermott in February 1973 for
£22,000, another 56 league appearances followed and six goals.
Liverpool FC then signed him in November 1974 for £170,000. After a hugely
successful period at Anfield, in which he played in 232 league
matches, scoring 54 times, McDermott returned to Newcastle United
FC in September 1982 for £100,000 and he completed another 74
league appearances, scoring another twelve. Where he remained
until he retired in September 1984. He did however, play five
matches, scoring once, for Cork City FC in January 1985, and onto
Apoel FC of Cyprus. He played in fifty Greek league matches,
scoring once, before finally hanging up his boots. |

Has carved out a successful coaching career,
seeming happy to be the assistant to his manager wherever he turns up.
Assisting Newcastle United FC and Kevin Keegan, followed by Kenny
Dalglish, between 5 February 1992 and 1998 (he was caretaker
manager for one drawn match in January 1997), and again for Graeme
Souness, Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce and Kevin Keegan once more, from 2005
to 2008. He went onto Huddersfield Town AFC and assisted Lee Clark from 19
December 2008 until February 2012. He has been assisting Clark again, now
at Birmingham City FC since June 2012. |
