Club Career

Club(s) Played juinor football in Sunderland before signing apprentice forms with rivals Newcastle United FC in July 1971, turning professional in September 1972. After 158 league appearances at left-back, scoring nine times, he was bought by Liverpool FC to solve their left-back problem following the departure of Alec Lindsay. The Reds paid 330,000 pounds for Kennedy in August 1978, and he would go on to play 251 times in the league, scoring 15 times.  Sold on to his hometown club in September 1985 when Sunderland AFC paid 100,000 pounds for his services. He played in 54 league matches, scoring twice. After two seasons at Sunderland, Kennedy moved to Hartlepool United FC (five league appearances) before heading to Europe to have spells at Husqvarna, K. Beerschot V.A.C. and Club 1903. He returned to England where he turned out for non-league Northwich Victoria FC (one league appearance) and Grantham FC (three league appearances). He had a spell with Wigan Athletic FC (22 league appearances), then to Colne Dynamoes FC (16 league appearances), and Wrexham AFC. Kennedy then rounded off his career at amateur level playing for Morecambe FC, Netherfield FC, Radcliffe Borough FC and finally Barrow AFC, finally retiring at age 40.

He has been seen frequently in recent years adding his opinions on the game as a pundit for Sky Sports, amongst other media organisations. He is also a columnist for the official Liverpool website and has represented Liverpool in the veterans' side in both the Sky Sports Masters series, which Liverpool have dominated, and special appearances abroad. Alan is also an after dinner speaker. Additionally, he runs a youth coaching school and hosts the radio talk show The Legends on century fm.
