Club Career

Club(s) Began his junior career at Cleveland Juniors FC, before failing to make the grade at at Newcastle United FC youth academy. The Middlesbrough FC youth academy snapped him up in 1999, and he remained until signed professional terms on 12 May 2005. He joined Leeds United AFC for a months loan deal on 16 October 2006, playing five league games. He was sent on loan again, for a three-month stint with Watford FC in September 2007, scoring five times in 12 league appearances.  After making his name with Middlesbrough FC in 96 league appearances, in which he scored 13 times, Johnson joined Manchester City FC on 1 February 2010, for an undisclosed fee (rumoured to be £7 million). He played 73 league games, scoring eleven times. Johnson returned to his hometown club, Sunderland AFC, on 24 August 2012, for an undisclosed fee. He had played 71 Premiership matches, scoring thirteen goals, up until 2013-14;
