Playing Career

Club(s)
Began his football career playing with Plymouth Schools and trained with the Plymouth Argyle FC team as a fourteen year-old, before signing with Birmingham City FC as an apprentice in 1969 after Wolverhampton Wanderers FC initially showed interest, turning professional on his seventeenth birthday and within the year, was linked with a £200,000 move to Everton FC in the October. Had a spell in the NASL with Detroit Express in the 1978 summer. Francis chose to join Nottingham Forest FC instead of Coventry City FC for a record transfer fee, £1,150,500, on 9 February 1979, returning to the NASL in the 1979 summer Joined Manchester City FC on 2 September 1981 for £1m. After only one season, Francis joined Italian club UC Sampdoria on 30 July 1982 for £880,000. After four years, he turned down a  move back to Birmingham City FC in favour of a lucrative deal with Atalanta for an undisclosed fee on 3 July 1986. Joined the English revolution at Rangers FC on 6 August 1987 for £75,000. Birmingham City FC, still wanting their man, offered their left-back Julian Dicks in December to Graeme Souness, who subsequently blocked the trade. Francis did return South when Queen's Park Rangers FC purchased his signature on Transfer Deadline Day, 24 March 1988, becoming their player-manager on 14 December 1988. He left when he was sacked a year later, 27 November 1989 following player disputes. Returning to the playing with Sheffield Wednesday FC and stepped up to become their manager on 17 June 1991.
