Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began his football career with Heanor Town FC, before joining his father
at
Nottingham Forest FC, signing in September 1984, he went on to score 101 league goals in 311 league
appearances, transferred following Forest's relegation from the Premier League and his father's retirement from management, Clough left
for Liverpool for £2.275 million on 7 June 1993. He was given the
number seven shirt and scored twice on his debut. Unfortunately, his
enigmatic start did not last and scored only seven times in 39 league
appearances. Clough was eventually sold to Alan Ball's Manchester City
FC on 24 January 1996 for £1.5 million. From Maine Road, Clough was loaned
out to his former club, Nottingham Forest FC in December 1996 to March
1997 (one goal in twelve league appearances) and then Sheffield Wednesday
FC in 1997. After scoring only four times in 39 league appearances
at the Maine Road club, Clough's senior career was effectively over at the
tender age of 32 years old when he was released from his contract at the
end of the 1997-98 season. And like his father, he then took up
management at an early age when he became player manager of Burton Albion
FC in the Southern League Premier Division. |

After being without a club at the end of the 1997-98 season, Clough was
offered the opportunity to become the player-manager of Southern League
club Burton Albion FC in
October 1998. He was linked with a
return to Nottingham Forest FC at the end of his first season, but he remained at Albion, a position he held until he took them to the brink of the
Football League in 2009. After 709 matches in charge, he took over at Derby County AFC on
8 January
2009, where he also turned out for the reserve side, but was sacked on 28
September 2013 following a run of bad results. On 23 October, he was
appointed the new manager of Sheffield United FC, until he was sacked on 25 May 2015 after failing to get the club into the
Premier League. Returned to Burton Albion FC on 7 December 2015, until he
left on 18 May 2020, amid the financial implications of the CoVid19 pandemic. On 6 November 2020, he
was appointed as the new manager of Mansfield Town FC. |
