Club Career

Club(s) Played schoolboy football in Gorleston, playing for Gorleston FC before joining The Valley groundstaff in June 1958 as a Charlton Athletic FC amateur. He turned professional in March 1959. He became the club captain and made 151 league appearances, scoring twenty goals. He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in February 1966 for a £40,000 fee, becoming their captain and made 361 league appearances, scoring nineteen times. He then joined the NASL with Minnesota Kicks in January for £15,000, he made eighteen appearances. He returned to England in August 1978 to start his management career with Hereford United AFC as player-manager, making a final sixteen appearances, scoring once, until October 1979.

Management Career

Club(s) Having began his management career with Hereford United AFC as player-manager, he rejoined Charlton Athletic FC as their team manager in October 1979, stepping up to the managerial role in March 1980. He became the manager at Brighton & Hove Albion FC from March 1980 until December 1982. In December 1984, he became the caretaker manager of Greek club Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou of Crete, until the end of that season. He also worked as the resrve coach of Portsmouth FC until 1995. Whereupon he held the managerial reins at Leatherhead FC in 1996.

On 25 March 1970, Sir Alf Ramsey announced a 28-man provisional squad to take to Mexico. Sir Alf named a further twelve reserves, who were inoculated and received medical certificates for one simple reason; any one of them could be called in an emergency.  Those given 'reserve' status included Mike Bailey.
