Club Career

Club(s) Played schoolboy football in Horwich, earning a trial with Bolton Wanderers FC, which was not acted upon. Joined the Royal Marines, and while playing for them against the Plymouth 'A' side, he subsequently joined Plymouth Argyle FC, firstly as an amateur on 23 September 1947, then signed professional forms after he was demobilised in November 1947, he went on to make 188 league appearances and scored 42 goals. Astall joined Birmingham City FC in October 1953, for around £14,000 and returned with 271 league appearances, scoring 67 goals. Transferred to Torquay United FC in May 1961 on a free transfer and completed a final 33 league appearances, scoring ten goals. Astall retired at the end of the 1962-63 season.
