Playing Career

Played schoolboy football in Horwich, earning a trial with Bolton Wanderers FC, which was not acted upon. Joined the Royal Marines, and while playing for them against the Plymouth 'A' side, he subsequently joined Plymouth Argyle FC, firstly as an amateur on 23 September 1947, then signed professional forms after he was demobilised in November 1947. Astall joined Birmingham City FC in October 1953, for around £14,000. Transferred to Torquay United FC in May 1961 on a free transfer. Astall retired at the end of the 1962-63 season.
