DescriptionDescription

White short-sleeved shirt, with alternating square rhombus shadow stripes; one column consisting of a continuous string of overlapping shapes of three different sizes, increasing and then decreasing in size, all bordered with a thick dark line, and the next column consisting of the same shapes, except that the medium-sized rhombus has five dark diagonal stripes rising from left to right across it when above the largest rhombus, and four when below it. The largest rhombus in each column is adjacent to the smallest in the next. Navy-blue winged collar, with small white stripes in a strip near the outer edge. Large white upside-down triangular insert beneath the neck, with thin navy-blue stripes, split down the middle, with a navy-blue button fastening via a loop of navy-blue material attached to the left side of the insert. Navy-blue diagonal stripes rising from left to right in a strip near the edge of the sleeves, with two navy-blue concentric diamonds after every fourth stripe. Embroidered emblem on left breast, with 'EURO 92' (without an apostrophe before the year) and then 'SWEDEN' centralised in capitalised navy-blue lettering underneath. Two embroidered navy-blue concentric diamonds on right breast, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised navy-blue lettering underneath and a registered trademark i.e. ® placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in navy-blue. Red number in middle of chest and on back, in the same font as on the previous Umbro England shirts, with a white border, outlined in red. Player's surname in capitalised plain red lettering, above number on back (pink characters were unused).

Navy-blue shorts, with white drawstring. A white strip comprising upper-third of seams, with navy-blue diagonal stripes rising from right to left, with two navy-blue concentric diamonds after every fourth stripe. Small diagonal red panel underneath white strip. Large white triangle, with base running down middle of seam, underneath red panel, with thin navy-blue stripes. Two embroidered white concentric diamonds on left thigh, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised white lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in white. White numbers in the same font as was to be used on England's 1993 white shirts, on right thigh, with embroidered emblem underneath.

White socks, with navy-blue turnover, three white lions on each.

Most Appearances

3 - Martin Keown, Gary Lineker, Carlton Palmer, Stuart Pearce, David Platt, Des Walker

  • Of the six players who started all three games, only five of them appeared for the full 270 minutes. Lineker was substituted against Sweden.

  • 15 members of England's European Championship squad appeared in this shirt.

  • None of them were making their international debuts, but six players won their last cap during this tournament.

  • Lineker's exit on his eightieth appearance brought a glittering international career to a sudden halt, leaving him one goal behind Sir Bobby Charlton's record total of 49 for England.

  • Trevor Steven bowed out after his 36th appearance, against France, and Neil Webb made his 26th and last appearance against Sweden.

  • Lineker's replacement for the last 28 minutes of England's tournament, Alan Smith, also never played for his country again.

  • Keith Curle played for the first 62 minutes against Denmark, until he was substituted by Tony Daley. Daley also played against Sweden, but neither of them played again for England.

Top Scorer

1 - David Platt

  • Platt scored England's only goal of the tournament, his eleventh for his country, having netted three times in the 1990 World Cup.

Captain

3 - Gary Lineker

  • Graham Taylor had appointed Lineker captain on his appointment in 1990, but their relationship ended on a sour note as his last appearance ended with the armband being tossed aside with almost half an hour remaining of the game against Sweden.

England arrived in Sweden with a nervous optimism and left after the first week, having failed to spark. The tournament will forever be associated with the controversial substitution, which brought to an end Gary Lineker's goal-laden international career.

This kit was the same design that had been worn at the 1990 World Cup, but was incorporated with a couple of historic landmarks in England's kit history. It was the first time that England had worn numbers on the front of the shirt, as well as the back, and it was also the first time that the players' names were displayed on the shirts. A few more years would pass before these innovations became permanent features.

England also displayed tournament labelling, as they had done for the last two World Cup final tournaments.

The first two photos at the top left of the page are of one of the shirts worn by Carlton Palmer (also seen in the match photo above). Next picture along is the number 14 shirt and shorts issued to Tony Dorigo, who did not play in the tournament. All of the shirt photos appear by kind permission of the National Football Shirt Collection (England Match Shirts), also part of the Neville Evans Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
