After five years waiting in the wings, the FA finally managed to unleash this all-blue strip (albeit with a mottled shadow pattern) in a full international, thanks to the combination of red and white worn by Turkey.

It had been around for a year, due to it being officially launched as one of England's alternative kits for the World Cup in Italy, but the seven games played in the tournament didn't offer any opportunity for England to wear anything but their traditional white shirts and navy shorts.

The Turkish game meant that England were wearing a blue shirt for the first time since the 1970 World Cup, thus succeeding where the two previous blue kits had failed, though they did wear pale-blue shorts and socks against Argentina at the 1986 World Cup.

This shirt was never worn again, but having made the breakthrough, the FA went ahead and commissioned their most ambitious blue shirt yet, ready to be launched the following year...

The photo above is of the shirt worn by Dennis Wise. It appears by kind permission of the National Football Shirt Collection (England Match Shirts), also part of the Neville Evans Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
