In the summer of 1891, plans were made for a second Canadian tour of the British
Isles by players from the Western Football Association following the success of
the 1888 venture.  However, at some point, the plans went awry, and a number of
people backed out.  As a result, players were recruited from the American clubs
in New England with whom the WFA had close ties.  From the outset, this trip was
seen by some people as a way in which to introduce themselves to British clubs
with the object of being signed by them.  If that was the object, then it, and
the whole trip in general, was a dismal failure.
