Notes
After a five-year gap, Bukta provided
England with a red change strip not unlike the previous version, last worn
in 1956. It was the same v-neck, but the numbers on the back were now
white and in the Bukta style. The emblem on the left breast had a white
border around it, the shorts were plain white and the stockings were the
same red pair, with a white band around the calf, that they had been wearing
with the white shirt since 1957.
The end of the 1961-62 season saw
England in all red for the first time (above photo), as red shorts were
introduced to make the set, more aesthetically pleasing than a combination
of navy and red, when up against a team in all white.
Although the white shirt acquired a
round-neck version in 1963, the red had to stick with the less fashionable
v-neck for the extensive tour of 1964, where it was surprisingly twice worn
against Portugal, paired with white shorts and socks. Then, against
Argentina, on its last outing, it was all red again, with even the stockings
losing the calf band. This
uniform was also worn, without the emblem, by an F.A. XI against 'double'
winners, Tottenham Hotspur in the 1961 F.A. Charity Shield at White Hart
Lane.
