England discarded their buttoned-down collars in the early twenties and reverted back to their traditional shirt design with four buttons down the front.

It was towards the end of this period that a soon-to-be-familiar label began to appear more regularly on the shirts, that of St. Blaize, and it was also a period when the subject of full England uniforms first began to be addressed. The Football Association, still steeped in their amateur traditions, had been getting away with only providing the England team with shirts to wear.

Each player had to bring his own shorts and socks, but with photographs now appearing more regularly and newsreels beginning  to feature international games at the local cinema, it was becoming evident that our finest professionals were resembling a team kitted out from a charity box. Dixie Dean is pictured (right) in action against Spain in 1931, wearing his Everton club shorts, with the white seam. Perhaps, the 1932 fixture with Wales was the last straw (click here to see photo).

Furthermore, with Wembley now being used for the Scotland fixture every other year, the national team's profile was raised and, all of a sudden, we began to see England in complete matching uniforms in selected games. The shorts were either navy or possibly black, whilst the socks were probably black, with white tops. For the 1933-34 season, it would appear that England switched to a different design of socks, with two white hoops around the tops and possibly wore complete uniforms in every fixture. This arrangement lasted until, at least, the end of 1934.

The following year's Scotland fixture saw another change in sock design and this was the one that was adopted for virtually every game up until the Second World War, though not in the final game of that 1934-35 season, in Amsterdam.

Picture above features a shirt worn by Fred Kean, sold at Mullock's auction (more details here).
