England stood 5th in
the first FIFA ranking of December, 1992 after a fairly successful run under manager
Graham Taylor. It was a level they were not to reach again until late 1997 under
Glenn Hoddle. As Taylor's stewardship turned sour in 1993, England began
a long slide down the rankings. A year after the initial ranking, England had fallen to 11th place,
the six-place drop reflecting losses in
Norway and Holland that doomed their efforts to qualify for the 1994 World Cup
finals and losses to the U.S.A. and Germany in the U.S.
Cup Tournament, where they finished last, although managing a draw with Brazil.
