  Sergeant William Russell Wainscoat
Birth 28 July 1898 in East Retford, Nottinghamshire [registered in East Retford, September 1898].
 

According to the 1901 census, William R. is the youngest of four children to Thomas and Annie Elizabeth (née Hall). They live at 66 Wharton Street in the Ordsall area of East Retford. His father is a railway shunter. 

 

According to the 1911 census, schoolboy William Russell is the only son living at home with his widowed father. They live at Sunnyside Cottages on Carlton Road in Worksop with a housekeeper. His father remains as a railway shunter.
Between 28 June 1915 and 20 March 1919, William R. was a member of the Notts & Derbys Regiment, then 5th Battalion Highland Light Infantry, becoming a sergeant.

 

According to the 1921 census, William Russell is now a professional footballer (for Barnsley FC) is living with Joe and Caroline Jackson, his uncle and aunty, and their two children, at 63 Snydale Road in Cudworth.
According to Passenger Lists, William R. Wainscoat was part of the FA Tour that left Southampton bound for Quebec, Canada on 15 May 1926 on board the Empress of Scotland, they returned to Liverpool on 23 July 1926 on board the Montroyal.

Marriage to Alice Laura Davis, on 2 August 1926, at St. John the Baptist Church in Cudworth [registered in Barnsley, September 1926].
 

According to West Yorkshire Electoral Registers, William and Alice were living at 18 St. John's Road in Hemsworth from at least 1927, and onto the Manor Inn from 1933 until at least 1950.
According to the 1939 register, William R., a licensed victualler, is married to Alice, and living at The Manor Hotel in Brierley Road, Hemsworth. He was also a WRC Head Warden.

Playing Career

Club(s) Began his football career playing with his works' team, Maltby Main Colliery FC, before and after WWI. Signed for Barnsley FC ahead of other league clubs on 4 March 1920, and scored a hat-trick on his debut against Fulham FC two days later, going on to score 54 goals in 144 league appearances. Middlesbrough FC signed Wainscoat on 18 December 1923 for a £4850 transfer fee, a record fee for Barnsley. After five goals in 34 league appearances, Leeds United FC then paid £2000 fee for his signature on transfer deadline day, 16 March 1925, he scored 85 goals in 215 league appearances. Joined Hull City FC on 29 October 1931, scoring 42 goals in 79 league appearances. He was placed on the 'transfer list' on 2 May 1934. He announced his retirement from the game on 7 July.

Held a variety of jobs outside the game - they included at different times railway clerk, licensee (Manor Inn in Grimethorpe for eighteen years.
