Club Career

Club(s) Started his career as a Liverpool FC academy goalkeeper, but left when he was fifteen years old. He changed his position to outfield and joined Bury FC's Youth & Centre of Excellence. He made his league debut before he signed professionally on 8 March 2003. Nugent signed for Preston North End FC on 11 January 2005 for £100,000. Following his England call-up, Nugent's value increased and he signed for Portsmouth FC in a £6 million deal on 11 July 2007, despite an offer by Sunderland AFC also. Within weeks however, a proposed moved to Derby County FC fell through, as did a loan move to Ipswich Town FC in March 2008.  However, a loan deal to Burnley FC did happen on 1 September 2009. And another from 1 February 2010, before he returned to Pompey. He spent the 2010-11 season at the south-coast club after failing to earn a permanent contract at Burnley or attract any other clubs. As a free agent, he signed for Leicester City FC on 5 July 2011, and then to Middlesbrough FC on 14 August 2015 for an eventual £4 million transfer fee. Signed for Derby County FC on 9 January 2017 for £2.5 million, before he was released on 3 June 2019. Nugent returned to Preston North End FC on 17 July 2019, and then joined Tranmere Rovers FC on Transfer Deadline Day, 1 February 2021.
