Playing Career


Club(s)
Began his career playing in Liverpool Schools before being signed on as an Everton FC apprentice in May 1967, turning professional in April 1969. After Crystal Palace FC tempted Johnson with a £100,000 transfer fee offer, he joined Ipswich Town FC in a player exchange deal (Rod Belfitt +£40,000) on 30 October 1972. Johnson turned down a move to Tottenham Hotspur FC in order to return to Merseyside when Liverpool FC bought the player in a £200,000 deal on 12 August 1976. Returned to Everton FC on 9 August 1982 for £100,000. Joined Norman Hunter's Barnsley FC on a months loan deal on 2 February 1984, before joining Manchester City FC on loan until the end of the season on Transfer Deadline Day, 22 March. Left for Tulsa Roughnecks in the NASL in the summer, before returning to assist Preston North End FC on 10 October 1984 on a free transfer. He joined Barrow FC in August 1985, becoming their player-manager on 24 October. He joined Maltese side Naxxar Lions FC in August 1986. He continued to train at Melwood, where he has been training and keeping himself fit since his return from America. He flew to Malta once a fortnight to play.

As his football career was coming to an end, Johnson was self-employed, working for teh Royal Life Insurance Company. In his latter years, Johnson worked back at Liverpool FC as a hosting. He also had a regular BBC Radio Merseyside slot as a summariser and also The Doc's Diagnosis" on the Red Alert Friday evening programme.
