Signed as an Aston Villa FC apprentice in 1974, making his debut in
February 1976 as a seventeen year-old substitute. He broke his leg in
August 1983 on a pre-season tour of Spain. He missed the entire 1983-84
season, and was then transferred to AS Bari in Italy for 250,000 in July
1985, after he regained his fitness and after he had played 286 league
appearances, scoring 42 times. His three seasons in Italy produced only
three goals in 94 league appearances. Graham Taylor re-signed Cowans in
July 1988, and another 117 league appearances and seven goals
followed. Cowans then joined Blackburn Rovers FC on 28 November 1991
for 200,000 (50 league appearances, 2 goals), before Cowans
rejoined Aston Villa FC for a third stint on a free transfer on 5 July
1993 (11 league appearances). After which Cowans played for
numerous middle-league clubs, Derby County FC on 3 February 1994 for
80,000 (36 league appearances, 1 goal). Wolverhampton Wanderers FC
on 19 December 1994 for 20,000 (37 league appearances). Sheffield
United FC in December 1995 for free (21 league appearances).
Bradford City AFC in August 1996 for free (25 league appearances).
Stockport County AFC in March 1997 for free (7 league appearances)
and finally Burnley FC in August 1997 on a non-contract basis (6
league appearances) before taking up a coaching role at the end of

Due to the fact that
many matches rarely stuck to exactly ninety minutes long, allowing time
for injuries, errors and substitutions. The minutes here
given can only ever be a guideline and cannot therefore be accurate, only
an approximation. |
