      | Club(s) | Played junior football in Nottingham, and had an unsuccessful 
	  trial with Aston Villa FC when he was fifteen years old. He played 
	  part-time with Long Eaton Rovers FC of the Notts Sunday League, before 
	  joining Long Eaton United FC. Brian Clough paid £2000 for him to 
	  take him to Nottingham Forest FC in March 1977. After scoring 32 
	  goals in 87 league appearances, he joined Manchester United FC on 
	  20 October 1980 for £1.25 million, breaking their record transfer 
	  fee paid and fee received. He made 58 league appearances, scoring 
	  eleven times. He returned to Forest in September 1982 for £250,000 
	  and made another 125 league appearances, scoring 38 times. 
	  He joined Notts County FC in June 1987 on a free transfer. After eighteen 
	  months, in which he played 63 league matches, scoring nine goals, Birtles 
	  ended his career with Grimsby Town FC with 69 league appearances 
	  and another nine goals. |
