Full name Samuel Barkas
Born 29 December 1909 at 41 Reservoir Street, Wardley Colliery, Gateshead, County Durham [registered in Gateshead, March 1910].

Census Notes

According to the 1911 census, Samuel was the eight of nine children (the sixth of seven boys!!), to Michael John and Elizabeth Ellen (née Orrell), living at 41 Reservoir Street in Wardley Colliery, Gateshead.  His father was a Hewer in the coal mine.

Cannot be found on the 1939 register.
Married to Mary Irene Barrett-Flesher, in April 1932 [registered in Bradford, Yorkshire, June 1932].
Died 10 December 1989 in Shipley, Bradford, aged 79 years 346 days [registered in Bradford, Yorkshire]. He collapsed in a street near to his home.
Height/Weight 5' 9", 11st. 0lbs [1937], 5' 9", 13st. 7lbs [1938].

Club Career

Club(s) Played junior football with Middle Dock FC in the Tyneside Junior League. He joined Bradford City FC in early 1928, he played in 202 league matches, scoring eight times, and Manchester City FC paid £5,000 for Barkas on 20 April 1934. He missed part of the 1937-38 season because of rheumatism. After 176 league appearances, with one solitary goal, he left in May 1947, who became the player-manager of Workington AFC.

notes Sam Barkas, and his Manchester City teammate, Eric Brook, were on their way to play for England against Scotland in a Red Cross International on 2 December 1939, they were involved in a road accident at Dishforth and were injured. On 27 March 1941, Judge Neville Laski KC awarded Barkas damages of £300 and Brook £1625 against the drivers of the two vehicles involved.

Beyond England

 He at first worked as a miner, then a farmer. He subsequently scouted for Manchester City FC and Leeds United FC.
