Census Notes

According to the 1911 census, a very young John lived with his older brother and parents, Frederick (a professional cricketer) and Florence at Temple Road, Cowley in Oxford.

According to the 1939 register, John, a labourer at the tobacco factory, is married to gladys, and they live at 12 Merton Road in Southampton.
Married to Gladys E. Collins (b.25 March 1916), at Woolston Church, Southampton, on 26 February 1939 [registered in Southampton, March 1939]. After their wedding, they walked out underneath an archway of cricket bats and football boots.
Died 3 April 1984 in Southampton, aged 76 years, 126 days. [registered in Southampton, April 1984]

Club Career

Club(s) Played schoolboy and junior football in Oxford before joining Oxford City FC in the Isthmian Senior League. He needed to move to Hampshire to qualify for their cricket side, so he signed with Southampton FC in September 1928 and after 106 league appearances and 46 goals, he joined Fulham FC on 16 February 1933, alongside their acting club captain and full-back, Michael Keeping. Arnold made another 213 league appearances in which he scored 57 goals. Retired during WW2.

Distinctions Also played first-class cricket with Hampshire.
His wife, gladys, is the neice of Ernie Hart. Making Ernie his uncle-in-law.

England Tragedy

"Married at Southampton on February 26, John Arnold, Fulham outside-left, and Hampshire County cricketer, went on a motoring tour. On March 4 he was caught doing 40 to 45 miles an hour in a built-up area, and at Eastleigh (Hants), where he was summoned to-day, he was fined £2. Arnold, who appeared in court with his wife, said that his speedometer must have been out of order." - Monday, 27 May 1939, The Evening News

Beyond England

Moved to Southampton in order to obtain a residential qualification to play for Hampshire CCC, he had previously played Minor Counties cricket for Oxfordshire.
