Club Career


Club(s):
Played in Havering, Essex and London Schools, then signed apprentice forms with Queen's Park Rangers FC in 1977, signing professionally on 20 September 1978. After 49 league appearances and 32 goals, Allen signed for Arsenal FC on 13 June 1980 for £1.25 million. Without playing a league match, he signed for Crystal Palace FC on 14 August 1980 in a straight swap involving Kenny Sansom. After nine goals in 25 league appearances, he rejoined Queen's Park Rangers FC on 8 June 1981 for £700,000. He made another 87 league appearances, scoring forty goals. Tottenham Hotspur FC signed him on 16 August 1984 for £750,000 and after 105 league appearances, in which he scored sixty goals, Allen moved onto France with FC des Girondins de Bordeaux for £1 million on 10 May 1988. After one season and thirty French league appearances with 21 goals, he returned to England with Manchester City FC on 18 August 1989 for £1.1 million, making 53 league appearances and scoring another sixteen goals. Joined Chelsea FC on 6 December 1991 for £250,000 for another sixteen league appearances and seven goals. West Ham United FC on 27 March 1992 for £250,000, making 38 league appearances and scored seventeen goals. Millwall FC signed Allen on 25 March 1994 for £75,000 and after twelve league appearances, onto Carlisle United FC on a free transfer on 7 September 1995, before retiring after three league appearances. He completed 418 league appearances and scored 202 goals.

Despite his prolific goalscoring, Clive Allen never actually witnessed an England goal.  His 320 minutes playing never produced a single goal.

Following retirement from playing football, Clive played American Football with the London Monarchs in NFL Europe.  He then held various coaching roles with Tottenham Hotspur, as well as media roles with the Sky Sports and ITV teams.
