ITV has secured the rights to show England's home international matches and away friendlies for four years from August 2008.  It was part of a package that included the FA Cup rights.  It was sealed for £425 million in a joint bid with Irish pay-per-view station Setanta.  Setanta will also show eight home friendly internationals, as well as the Under-21 matches, alongside that of the women's internationals.

Terry Butcher has joined the coaching staff at Scottish First Division side Partick Thistle until the end of the season.  Butcher, 48, who was axed by Australian club Sydney FC last month, will join caretaker boss Jimmy Bone on the bench for Saturday's match against Gretna.

Some of England's squad had to be moved for their own safety during the match against Andorra.  McClaren and his players were subjected to a torrent of abuse by a large group of England fans.  The FA confirmed that the non-playing squad members were forced to retreat to the dressing room before half-time.  The FA said its action in moving the non-playing squad members was "precautionary".  But football correspondent Jonathan Legard added: "Pre-emptive or not, how many times have England players been the focus of such vitriol from their own followers that FA security officials have felt the need to move them out of the firing line?  "Even allowing for the inadequacy of the stewarding at the stadium, this marks a new low in relations between England players and their supporters."

Steve McClaren pleaded with the team's fans to get behind the players after their win over Andorra.  The match was goalless at half-time and the England team were subjected to constant booing from their fans.  "What I say to the fans is stick with the players, they are giving it their all and they are out there doing it," said McClaren.  The England coach walked out of the post-match news conference, telling the media they could write what they liked.  "Gentlemen, if you want to write whatever you want to write, you can write it because that is all I am going to say. Thank you.  Nothing concerns me about what people write or say.  What matters is what is on the inside."

Sir Tom Finney has spoken of his pride at seeing David Nugent become the first Preston North End player to score for England in 49 years.  "It was only a tap in but nevertheless he scored and that was very important on his debut.  It gives me a bit of a thrill to see a Preston player wearing an England shirt - the club itself will be very proud."  Finney was the last Preston player to score for England when he found the net against Northern Ireland in 1958.

Manchester City are set to discover the extent of the calf injury suffered by Micah Richards.  Richards, 19, was carried off during England's win over Andorra and may need surgery on the long-term problem in the summer.  He will have a scan back at City but boss Stuart Pearce gave his full backing to Richards' England hopes.  Pearce said: "We've concerns about his calf, but it's an honour for him and his club to represent his country."  Although the signs did not look good as Richards left the action in Barcelona, Pearce understood he had not broken any bones.

Wednesday, 28th March

Andorra 0-3 England

Steven Gerrard spared England and coach Steve McClaren's blushes with a crucial double strike to break Andorra's resistance in the Euro 2008 qualifier.  England were jeered off after a shameful first 45 minutes in Barcelona.  But Gerrard broke the deadlock with a low 20-yard drive after 53 minutes, then slid home a neat finish with 15 minutes left in an ill-tempered clash.  Debutant David Nugent scored in the last minute after Jermain Defoe saw a shot saved by keeper Koldo Alvarez.

Frank Lampard has been ruled out of the qualifier against Andorra tonight due to a cracked bone in his wrist.  The 28-year-old suffered the injury during training on Monday when he was struck by a Wayne Rooney shot.  But the injury is worse than was first thought and Lampard will not feature at Espanyol's Olympic Stadium. Stewart Downing is expected to step in to the midfield on the left, with Aaron Lennon playing wide on the right.
John Terry is adamant England's recent poor form is not down to lack of desire or passion from the players.  The England captain said: "It really is an insult to hear people saying we don't care.  When you are out on the pitch doing everything you can and hear something like that, it really gets to you.  Nothing gives me and my family more pride than me pulling on that England shirt.  It's the same for every player."

Tuesday, 27th March

Frank Lampard was fit to train with his England team-mates at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.  The midfielder injured his right wrist when he was struck by a Wayne Rooney shot in training on Monday.  Lampard is set to be fit, while Ashley Cole is expected to play at left-back in Wednesday's match after missing the draw in Israel through suspension.  Right-back Micah Richards, a substitute on Saturday, is expected to start. The entire 23-man squad was able to train on Tuesday.
Uefa is not going to punish Steve McClaren for not attending a news conference on Tuesday.  McClaren gave interviews on Monday and this was deemed sufficient.  "There is no reason to question the accessibility given to the media," said a Uefa spokesman.  Captain John Terry and his deputy Steven Gerrard gave the news conference on Tuesday and Uefa insist there was no problem with the arrangements.  "I can confirm that Uefa is satisfied with the media activities scheduled by the English FA, prior to their qualifier on Wednesday against Andorra.  We understand that the England manager was made widely available to the media yesterday and that at today's press conference both the captain and vice-captain were made available."

Monday, 26th March

Wayne Rooney & Steve McClaren were reportedly involved in a dressing room bust-up after England's goalless draw with Israel. McClaren is thought to have singled out Rooney as he blasted his side for failing to score yet again.  The game was England's fourth in their last five during which they have not found the back of the net, Rooney has not scored a competitive goal in an England shirt since Euro 2004.  Most UK newspapers reported that McClaren turned on the misfiring striker and accused him of not having played well for three years.  The 21-year-old did not take the criticism well, and is said to have stormed out of the changing rooms in Tel Aviv, but not before shouting back at his coach.  Rooney was unhappy at having been singled out, and is believed to have hit back at McClaren immediately, saying he is not the only who should be shouldering the blame for England's ineffectiveness in front goal.  Rooney then launched into a tirade against Israel stopper Tal Ben Haim, who had been able to shackle the striker for the entire ninety minutes. The rant was so loud it could be heard in the Israel dressing room, according to the Daily Mirror.  England players were quick to defend their team-mate, with Steven Gerrard saying: "You can't just point your finger at the strikers. It's down to myself, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon and other players to help the forwards score goals."

Saturday, 24th March

Israel 0 England 0:  England's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign stuttered again with a dismal stalemate against Israel in Tel Aviv.  Steve McClaren's side drew a blank once more, and it was another lifeless performance from England.

Friday, 23rd March

Micah Richards should be available to play for England against Israel in Tel Aviv tomorrow.  Richards was able to train with the rest of the England squad today after shaking off his calf injury. Steve McClaren will now hope Richards suffers no reaction to today's training session.  All available 23 players in McClaren's squad were involved in training. Jonathan Woodgate has remained in England for treatment on a knee injury.
Steve McClaren says he does not feel under more pressure as he prepares his side for a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier in Israel.  McClaren's side are third in Group E after drawing with Macedonia and losing their last qualifier away in Croatia.  But he said: "I don't sense there's any more pressure. Every game comes with a lot of pressure for England.  But I've looked forward to this since the Croatia game. These are the sort of games when we all need to deliver.  I've been involved with England for a while and we always seem to box ourselves into tricky situations in qualifying.  But the key is to make sure you qualify, that's all that matters.  We've got enough talent, quality and belief to qualify and we must take all of that out on to the pitch.  We have to deliver.  We've got eight games left to qualify and it doesn't matter where we are now, it's where we end up.  We're coming here to win the game and put on a performance. We're capable of beating anyone on our day if we perform."
Michael Owen remains on course to return from a serious knee injury before the end of the season.  The Newcastle United striker is recovering from surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament at the World Cup in June last year.  "I would think it would be a couple of weeks before I can join in training.  I am kicking and running straight as hard as I like, and then it is the twisting and turning."

Thursday, 22nd March

Michael Gray will join Championship strugglers Leeds United from Blackburn Rovers for a second spell a year after making his first loan appearance for the club.  The 32-year-old, who spent three months at Elland Road in 2005, arrives for an initial month with a view to staying until the end of the season. Gray has not been a regular at Ewood Park this season, making just 12 first-team appearances.
Jonathan Woodgate will not be travelling to Israel with the rest of the England squad today.  But whilst he won't be fit for Saturday could be available for Wednesday's game against Andorra.  The FA medical team have spoken to their counterparts at Middlesbrough and agreed to continue his treatment in England.  Steve McClaren said: "Jonathan's fitness comes first and we won't take risks with any player.  We will keep in close contact with Middlesbrough over the next few days to determine his availability for the Andorra match."

Wednesday, 21st March

Andrew Cole has joined Birmingham City from Portsmouth on loan.  The deal lasts until the end of the season.  Cole, 35, has made only five starts for Pompey since joining from Manchester City for £500,000 in August 2006.  Blues boss Steve Bruce, a former team-mate of Cole at Manchester United, feels he will boost his side's hopes of promotion to the Premiership.  "Andy can help us get across the finishing line in what is a very tight promotion battle.  I played with him at United - although it was a long time ago - and he is a top, top professional who looks after himself. That's why he is still a Premiership player.  We have very young players at the top end of the pitch, people like Cameron Jerome, DJ Campbell and Nicklas Bendtner although they all have great potential.  I just feel we need that extra bit of experience and quality up front."
Luke Young has been drafted into the England squad that will face Israel and Andorra.  Young, 27, joins the squad, who will train at the new Wembley on Wednesday, after Micah Richards underwent tests on a calf injury.

Tuesday, 20th March

Steve McClaren is waiting as defenders Micah Richards and Jonathan Woodgate desperately try to shrug off injuries in time for the matches against Israel and Andorra.  Richards suffered a shin injury during Manchester City's Premiership win over Middlesbrough last weekend while Woodgate picked up a knock during Middlesbrough's FA Cup replay defeat at Manchester United.   "We are assessing Micah daily. We hope by the weekend he will be okay," McClaren said. "Jonathan Woodgate picked up a knock on his knee which again we are assessing daily … We're keeping them with us and hopefully they'll be right."  McClaren also revealed that he expected both men to travel with the rest of the squad to Israel - who they will face on Saturday - and Spain - where they face Andorra in Barcelona four days later.

Monday, 19th March

David Nugent has been called-up into the England squad for the first time to replace the injured Darren Bent.  The Preston North End striker was named in the Under-21 squad to face Italy at Wembley, but following Bent's withdrawal, will now join up with the seniors as they prepare to face Israel and Andorra.  Nugent has been in excellent form for his club, scoring 16 goals in all competitions. He has also found the net three times for the Under-21s this season, his most recent being in the 2-2 draw with Spain last month.
If Nugent plays on Saturday he would become the first outfield player from outside the top flight to play for England since Michael Gray in 1999.  Nugent is the first Preston player to have been called into an England squad since Sir Tom Finney was in 1958.
Gareth Barry has been drafted into the England squad by coach Steve McClaren.  The Aston Villa left-back, has gained a reprieve following the withdrawal of Gary Neville over the weekend.

Sunday, 18th March

Steven Gerrard is fit to meet up with the rest of the England squad on Tuesday following his injury scare this afternoon.  Darren Bent is doubtful after aggravating a knee injury.  Micah Richards has ongoing calf problems and their are still two cup replays to come tomorrow night.  Bent and Richards will still report for duty to be assessed by the England medical team.
Premiership An Andrew Johnson injury-time goal was the decisive moment in the match between Everton and Arsenal.  Everton won 1-0.
A stalemate at Villa Park - Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 0, in a match that saw Steven Gerrard limp off towards the end of play.
At The Valley, Charlton Athletic took much needed points away from Newcastle United.  Their 2-0 win was marred by a Darren bent injury.
Brazil will be the first opponents of the England senior team on 31st May 2007, at least according to Brian Barwick's interview in the News of the World newspaper.  Rumours have been strife throughout the month, but this does seem to seal the fate of the fixture.

Saturday, 17th March

Gary Neville will miss the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra because of an ankle ligament injury.
Premiership Wayne Rooney scores twice at the first match of the day at Old Trafford, Manchester United beat Bolton Wanderers 4-1, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney came through unscathed, but Gary Neville was not so lucky, his innocuous collision with Gary Speed after seven minutes left him needing treatment, and eventually stretchered of the pitch.
Paul Robinson keeps a clean sheet and scores a free-kick against his deputy, Watford's Ben Foster, Robinson's freakish 63rd minute goal came after Jermaine Jenas had already put Spurs' in front.  Tottenham Hotspur eventually beat Watford 3-1.
Manchester City beat Middlesbrough to ease the pressure on manager Stuart Pearce, but lost Micah Richards to an ankle injury in the first half.

Friday, 16th March

Steve McClaren delivered no major surprises in his 23-man squad for the Euro 2008 double header against Israel and Andorra.  Manchester City's Joey Barton, Aston Villa's Gareth Barry and Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips are left out after the defeat against Spain.  McClaren's main dilemma will be at left-back, where he will choose between Jamie Carragher and Phil Neville.  Ashley Cole is suspended for the Israel game and Wayne Bridge is injured.  Preston's David Nugent must await the outcome of the weekend's Premiership games before discovering if he will be promoted from the under-21 squad preparing to face Italy at Wembley.

Thursday, 15th March

David Nugent is set to be called into the England squad if any of the front-line strikers are injured.  Steve McClaren watched the 21-year-old forward play against Ipswich in the Championship game at Deepdale on Tuesday.  The England coach has also backed Aaron Lennon to handle the pressure of the crucial matches.  "Aaron came into the World Cup squad and excited us from day one.  He still has a long way to go but he has a lot of potential and we expected to see a lot more of him this season than we actually have because of illness and injuries.  We need experience in this game but he has been to a World Cup, so I have no hesitation putting him into my squad."  Lennon is expected to start on the left of midfield for the match in Tel Aviv on 24 March.  Steven Gerrard is set to be named on the right of a four-man midfield which will feature Owen Hargreaves and Frank Lampard in the middle.  McClaren is hoping to select Paul Robinson in goal, with Jamie Carragher at left-back, Gary Neville at right-back and John Terry alongside Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence.  Wayne Rooney is expected to play alongside Andy Johnson in attack if all come through their weekend Premiership fixtures unscathed - with Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe also in line for a call-up.  Meanwhile, if Nugent appeared for England he would be the first Preston player to do so since Sir Tom Finney in 1958.

Wednesday, 14th March

Wayne Bridge is expected to be ruled out for three weeks because of surgery to solve a cartilage problem.  The left-back last played for the club as a substitute in the victory at Portsmouth on 3 March.  "He'd been struggling with pain at the back of the knee for about three weeks.  A scan confirmed that he had a tear in the meniscus, the shock absorber in the joint, but it was a stable tear.  We thought we may be able to leave it to the end of the season but it got to the stage where he was struggling to do a flat-out sprint so we thought it would be best to get it done.  When we had this operation done on Damien Duff, we had him back and playing in three weeks and we hope that will be the same with Bridgey. But you always wait for the operation to be done to see what that the prognosis is going to be." said club doctor Bryan English.
Alan Smith has insisted he has no intention of leaving Manchester United for any other club and is determined to force his way into the team.  The 25-year-old rejected a loan move away from Old Trafford in January, with Cardiff and Smith's former club Leeds interested in a short-term deal.  Smith said: "I am not leaving, it is as simple as that. There has been a lot of speculation but I am going nowhere.  I feel I'm good enough to play in this team. I have always believed that.  The manager gave me the option to go out on loan but I didn't want to.  I am sure he thought it was in the best interests of both myself and the club but I told him I believed I was good enough to play in his team when I am fit and he accepted that."
Chris Sutton's contract talks have been delayed by Aston Villa manager Martin O'Niell, until the end of the season.  Former England striker Sutton has been sidelined with blurred vision since receiving a bang on the head against Manchester United on 23 December.  Sutton, 33, will revisit a specialist in two weeks, but his chances of playing again this season are fading.  O'Neill said: "We'll see where he is at the end of the season and if there's an improvement we'll look at things."

Tuesday, 13th March

Adrain Bevington, the FA spokesman, has added to newspaper speculation that England's first senior international at the new Wembley Stadium will be against Brazil or Argentina.  In a recent interview, he said that the first opponents would be a top international side who were "quite possibly from South America."  He dismissed previous reports they would face old rivals Germany, saying: "The Germans are not booked in first."
Stuart Pearce has denied reports that he has two games to save his Manchester City managerial job.  Pearce's side have lost their last four Premiership games and were dumped out of the FA Cup at Blackburn Rovers.  City face Chelsea on Wednesday and Middlesbrough on Saturday - but Pearce said: "My job doesn't boil down to losing the next two games.  This is a fantastic club to work for and I plan to be here for much longer than that."
Anthony Gardner will be sidelined for the next six weeks after sustaining a hairline fracture of the fibula playing for Tottenham Hotspur at Chelsea on Sunday.  Gardner, 25, sustained the injury shortly after coming on as a substitute during the 3-3 draw in the FA Cup.  "We'll do a CT scan but it looks like he'll be out for around six weeks.  Fortunately, we have a squad of versatile players who can cover our defensive positions." said Spurs boss Martin Jol.
Joey Barton has been arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage.  The Manchester City midfielder was questioned by police over an alleged argument with a taxi driver in Liverpool.  It is reported that the incident took place in the Wavertree area of the city earlier this month.  A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed a 24-year-old Widnes man had been arrested and released on bail pending further inquiries.
Danny Mills will not be returning to Leeds United on loan, according to his Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce.  Mills has been linked with a switch to his former club to help their fight to avoid relegation from the Championship.  But Pearce said the deal cannot go through because Mills, 29, is yet to recover from a shin splints injury.  "Until we get him fully fit, we can't make any decision about him. Danny is happy with that and understands the situation.  Unfortunately, Danny is not fit at the moment.  He has still to get over the stress fracture of his shin."
Francis Jeffers has been forced to end his loan spell at Ipswich Town early and has returned to Blackburn Rovers after suffering a hamstring injury.  The 26-year-old was two weeks into a month-long loan spell and had made an immediate impact scoring against Hull City.  Jeffers has had a scan which revealed the extent of the problem.  Ipswich physio Dave Williams said: "Franny has a grade two tear in the hamstring and it means he's likely to be out a number of weeks."

Monday, 12th March

Roy McFarland has left Chesterfield.  McFarland, who had been in charge at Saltergate for nearly four years, leaves the club just a point above the relegation zone after a poor run.  Chairman Barrie Hubbard said: "Roy has helped return respect from the football world and we thank him for that.  But Lee deserves the chance to take over.  During my long involvement with the club I have made a number of mistakes, but appointing Roy McFarland as manager was not one of them.  He helped a club recovering from the shenanigans of a previous regime."
Francis Jeffers may be forced to end his loan spell at Ipswich Town early and return to Blackburn Rovers after suffering a hamstring injury against Southend United.  The 26-year-old is two weeks into a month-long loan spell and faces a scan to discover the extent of the problem.  Striker Jeffers said: "I think it's a tear. I'm gutted as I was enjoying my football here."  Ipswich physio Dave Williams said: "We'll ask Rovers if they want us to scan him or whether he'll go back."

Sunday, 11th March

FA Cup quarter-finals Two goals from Frank Lampard saved Chelsea's game as his goals inspired a fightback against Tottenham Hotspur, the game ended 3-3, ensuring another headache ahead of the England qualifiers next week.  On a positive note, Ben Foster's heroics for Watford ensured his side claimed a semi-final berth following 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle.
Scottish Premier Ugo Ehiogu scores his first goal as Rangers beat Celtic by a single goal, to put a small dent in Celtic's overwhelming lead at the top of the Premier League.  The veteran defender netted an impressive overhead kick early in the second period after Celtic had made all of the running in the opening half.
Joe Cole believes he will be ready to make his injury comeback for Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Valencia on 4 April.  Cole has missed much of this campaign with a stress fracture of the foot.  Blues manager Jose Mourinho had feared the 26-year-old's season could be over but has now revealed: "Joe Cole told me he will be ready for Valencia.  So if not for Valencia maybe for the next week after that.  The fact that he is saying that will push him.  He has a target and for me that is good.  Joe was a key player last season.  It was the best season of his life and he was crucial from the first moment to the last. He had an unbelievable season.  This season he has had five minutes here and there, and finally surgery and then has been out for a long time."

Saturday, 10th March

FA Cup quarter-finals Middlesbrough and Manchester United must do it again after drawing 2-2 this evening.  Despite a Wayne Rooney opening goal, the replay will be played a week before England's match with Andorra and |Israel - seriously affecting any preparations.
Peter Crouch is set to be out for up to four weeks after deciding to undergo surgery on his broken nose.  Crouch suffered the injury against Sheffield United on 24 February and is likely to be out of England's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra.   "If it's affecting my performances I know I'm going to have to get it over and done with.  The doctor has said that after getting it done I'll be out for three to four weeks.  That would be really frustrating because at this stage of the season I really don't want to miss any games."
The Football Association has finally gained control of the new Wembley Stadium, more than a year after it was originally scheduled to open. Construction firm Multiplex handed over the keys late on Friday, signalling an end to its £757m building work.  The FA said it was a "significant step" towards staging May's FA Cup final at the new north London complex.

Monday, 5th March

David Beckham's hopes of being recalled by England to face Israel and Andorra this month are over after he was ruled out for four weeks with a knee injury.  He will also miss a return to Old Trafford on 13 March when he was set to play for a European All-Star XI.  Tests at Real's training ground confirmed that Beckham had damaged the internal lateral ligament in his knee.
Teddy Sheringham has been offered a deal to join Australian side Sydney FC.  Sheringham, 41 next month, is believed to have been offered a year's contract and the option of a second year at the A-League club.  "He's still playing at the top level and is, by any standards, an excellent player," club chief executive George Perry told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.  "He has a wealth of experience and his presence would put bums on seats."

Sunday, 4th March

David Beckham limped off with a knee injury during the second half of Real Madrid's 1-1 draw against Getafe.  Beckham hurt his right knee after miscueing a cross and running into advertising hoardings behind the goal.  He will miss Wednesday's Champions League game at Bayern Munich.  Beckham will undergo a scan on his knee tomorrow.
Wayne Rooney will have a scan today to determine the extent of the knee problem he sustained at Liverpool.  Rooney, injured when he went in for a tackle with Jamie Carragher, appears to be doubtful for Wednesday's crucial Champions League tie with Lille.  "Wayne will go for a scan," manager Sir Alex Ferguson said.  "It was a bad tackle - Carragher got him right on the knee. We'll have to see how he is."
Premiership Jermain Defoe scores one Tottenham Hotspur's four goals in the 4-3 epic thriller.  Defoe scored the 51st min. penalty at his old stomping ground, Upton Park, home of West Ham United.  Lee Bowyer and Paul Konchesky were two of the six Hammers players to be booked.

Saturday, 3rd March

Premiership Paul Scholes was sent off and Wayne Rooney limped off as Manchester United scored an injury time winner at Liverpool.

Friday, 2nd March

Francis Jeffers has joined Ipswich Town on a month's loan deal from Blackburn Rovers.  "It's a real coup for us to bring Franny to the club. It's an exciting signing for us," Ipswich boss Jim Magilton said. "He had Premiership pedigree and has played at the very highest level with England.  He has played for some of the top clubs in the country and has cost over £10m in transfer fees, so that tells you something about the player."
