England U21 3-1 Norway U21: Two clinical goals from David Bentley helped England Under-21s see off a stubborn challenge from their Norwegian counterparts at the Madejski Stadium, Reading.  Anton Ferdinand had struck the post for England before Peter Whittingham's low free-kick put them ahead on 24 minutes.  Borre Steenslid levelled on 52 minutes with a neat header, but Bentley quickly restored the lead with a cool finish.  And he soon added another, controlling a mis-hit volley from Tom Huddlestone and firing into the corner of the net.
Sven-Göran Eriksson feels there is an added sense of urgency among his England squad for the friendly against Uruguay.  The game is England's last before Eriksson is due to announce his World Cup squad on 15 May.  "Everybody wants to be in the squad and everybody wants to be in the team because they know this is the last chance when we are together.  That's very good. They can feel the World Cup is close."
Eriksson said Ashley Cole would be given as much as time as possible to prove his fitness for the World Cup.  "I'm told it's not the same injury as before but I haven't been able to check it out yet.  But I can say that we will wait a long time to rule him out because he is one of the best left-backs in the world."
Eriksson said he and the FA were discussing staging another game to give squad players a chance to play.  "We have enough games for the first XI, but maybe for those finishing the league on 6 May we might try to organise one more friendly."
Ashley Cole faces up to three more weeks out after picking up an ankle injury on his latest return to action on Monday.  The England left-back limped out of Arsenal's reserve team clash with Tottenham after only seven minutes.  His latest injury is described by Arsenal as "a sprained ankle".  His latest comeback was ended by a firm but fair challenge by young Tottenham striker Andy Barcham in the game at Barnet's Underhill ground.

Monday, 27th February

David Beckham expects to feature in England's friendly against Uruguay on Wednesday.  The England skipper was substituted in Real Madrid's weekend loss to Mallorca after picking up a back injury.  But Beckham said: "My back should be fine. It was just a little bit of pain and being cautious I just came off."
There are concerns over midfielder Steven Gerrard's fitness after he required treatment on his foot during Liverpool's win over Manchester City.

Sunday, 26th February

Final:- Wayne Rooney scores twice as Manchester United thrash Wigan Athletic 4-0.  Rooney also received the Alan Hardaker Trophy for being the Man of the Match.

Sierra Leone have offered the job of national coach to former England international Andy Gray.  The president of the Sierra Leone Football Association (Slafa), Nahim Khadi, asked the former Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur player on Friday if he will take up the post.  But Gray, who travelled to the country to help out with some football development programmes, said he will respond to the offer on Monday.  "Andy Gray is my number one target," Khadi said.

Saturday, 25th February

Premiership football:- Emile Heskey scores the only goal of the game as Birmingham City beat SunderlandFrank Lampard scores Chelsea's first of two goals against Portsmouth.

Wes Brown has won a recall to the England squad for Wednesday's friendly with Uruguay.  His team-mate Gary Neville is also brought back by Sven-Göran Eriksson for the match at Anfield.  Darren Bent gets a chance to stake his claim for a World Cup place, but Phil Neville and Paul Konchesky miss out.  Michael Owen, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Jonathan Woodgate, Kieron Dyer, Alan Smith, Chris Kirkland and Owen Hargreaves are all injured.  Eriksson picked a 23-man squad with few surprises.  Neville and Jamie Carragher both return after injury and Kieran Richardson, like Bent, steps back up to senior level after playing for the under-21 team.   Eriksson also confirmed he wanted to pick Woodgate but he was injured in Real Madrid's Champions League defeat to Arsenal.  He's unlucky. Every time I decide to pick him, even in the past, he's been injured a few days before I announce the squad.  The same has happened now.  It's a big question mark of course. I hope he will play more regularly when he's fit because he's an extremely good football player and defender.  But if he plays one game and misses the next, I don't know what to do because you can't change your 23 players once the tournament has started. You have to be careful."

England will not find out the schedule for their Euro 2008 qualifiers until next week after the countries in their group failed to reach an agreement.  Uefa are now set to hold a draw at their Nyon headquarters on 2 March to decide when the games will be played.  But the Football Association want Uefa to delay such a move for 24 hours in a bid to settle it through more talks.  The FA was able to arrange the organisation of England's fixtures but the lack of unilateral agreement across the rest of the nations led to a temporary stalemate.  "The FA was able to agree all of our fixtures but, unfortunately, not all of the national associations of the other countries were able to agree among themselves.  It is disappointing but it is sometimes difficult to agree a fixture list when there are such big groups.  We are going to ask UEFA to delay the drawing of lots for 24 hours, to try and find a resolution and if we can find a resolution then it won't go to a drawing of lots."
Kieron Dyer's injury nightmare has continued with the news he will be out for three weeks with a hamstring strain.  Dyer suffered the injury during the FA Cup win over Southampton on Saturday - his first start for about six months.  Dyer was suffering from fatigue after playing 76 minutes against the Saints on Sunday, but it later emerged that he had a more worrying problem.  Manager Glenn Roeder said:  "We are positive that in no longer than three weeks Kieron will be training again.  Seventy-odd minutes might have just tested Kieron a little bit too much and tiredness has caught him out.  At the moment there isn't a major concern that, with the scan showing a very mild strain.  Because it's Kieron, you can never put an absolute definite date on it, but we the important thing is we are keeping Kieron positive and he is keeping himself positive."
Legendary Spanish striker Telmo "Zarra" Zarraonandia, whose goal against England in the Maracana Stadium gave his country their only World Cup semi-final berth in 1950, has died aged 85, hospital sources in Bilbao said.  Zarra, who made his name with all-Basque side Athletic Bilbao, won 20 caps and on July 2 wrote his entry in the game's history books in scoring the goal that knocked out England.

Tuesday, 21st February

Jonathan Woodgate will undergo tests on his thigh injury tomorrow after limping out of Real Madrid's Champions League defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday.  The centre-back suffered a suspected hamstring strain nine minutes into the 1-0 loss.  A Real statement said: "At the end of the match the medical services confirmed Woodgate has a strain.  On Wednesday it will be examined, and a decision taken on his ailment."

Gary Neville has launched an attack on the Football Association after he was found guilty of improper conduct.  He was fined £5,000 after taunting Liverpool fans after United's late winner at Old Trafford in January.  Neville said: "I am extremely disappointed.  I believe it is a poor decision, not just for me but for all footballers. Being a robot, devoid of passion and spirit is obviously the way forward.  And I ask the authorities, 'Where is football being taken?'"

Michael Owen may be back in time for next month's FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea.  The 25-year-old England forward broke a bone in his foot on 31 December and initially targeted a return in April.  But caretaker manager Glenn Roeder said Owen may make the March trip to Stamford Bridge.  He said: "It will be touch and go.  He's certainly not behind time, if anything he might be a little bit ahead.  He has got no concerns with the way the operation went and the way the injury is healing.  Apparently, it is healing really well."  Roeder said it was difficult to give a precise date for Owen's return.  "He's not doing enough in training yet, he has only just started jogging.  But he is pleased with the amount of jogging he is doing and he is pain-free."

The new Wembley Stadium will not be ready for the matches lined up in the summer, including the FA Cup final and the two England matches expected to be played there.  The Cup Final will be moved again to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, whilst England's matches against Hungary and Jamaica expect to be played at Old Trafford.

Monday, 20th February

Alan Smith hopes to make a full recovery after suffering a horrific leg break in Manchester United's FA Cup defeat by Liverpool.  Smith broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle after falling awkwardly.  "When I looked, the leg was lying one way and my ankle was pointing towards Hong Kong so I knew I was in serious trouble.  But the doctors are very positive, I've had an operation and now it's a question of starting on the road back."  The midfielder is expected to be out for at least nine months after undergoing surgery on yesterday.

Sunday, 19th February

Fifth Round:- Joe Cole scores twice as Chelsea knock-out minnows Colchester United.

Saturday, 18th February

Fifth Round:- Peter Crouch scores the only goal of the day for Liverpool against Manchester United, Alan Smith is stretchered with a serious leg and ankle injury.  Darren Bent set Charlton Athletic on their way 3-1 win against BrentfordKieron Dyer scores for Newcastle United against Southampton.

Sven-Göran Eriksson has told the FA he does not want his successor to shadow him during the World Cup finals.  "I don't want to go into the World Cup with two national coaches.  This might be my last World Cup and I want it to be done my way."  Eriksson also confirmed he will play no part in selecting the next England boss.  "I've told the FA it is totally up to them to find my replacement.  The last thing I want is to be accused of helping them find someone who might not be up to the job."

Friday, 17th February

Fabio Capello has not been approached by the FA to head the England team.  Italian newspapers have claimed that the Juventus coach has been offered the role.  "There have been no approaches made by the FA to any individuals or clubs regarding the recruitment of the next England coach.  Nobody has been authorised to lead any formal approaches."

The Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion is a cause for concern for World Cup organisers.  It was only about a quarter full for the Middlesbrough-Stuttgart UEFA Cup match, but is likely to hold a capacity crowd for the World Cup matches. Safety fears have been raised after a security alert.  A burst pipe in a kitchen caused an alert 30 minutes before kick-off.  Announcements at the stadium were made in German, with no translation, meaning many Boro fans remained in their seats during the evacuation.  The stadium will be used for six World Cup matches and England could play there if they win their group.

Tuesday, 14th February

John Gregory is in talks to become the next coach of the Hungary national team.  The 51-year-old would take over from Germany legend Lothar Matthaus, who was sacked after he failed to take the team to the World Cup finals.  "Talks are ongoing and there could be something in the next 10 days,"  Gregory said.  Gregory's first game in charge could be against England, who Hungary are scheduled to play on 30 May.  Although the Hungary Football Association deny making any decisions until after a new President is elected after 27 February.

Monday, 13th February

Ledley King should commit his long-term future to Tottenham Hotspur and sign a new contract extension.  Recent reports suggested the 25-year-old has rejected an offer to extend his deal, which expires in 2008.  But executive director Paul Barber said: "The talks are still on-going with the chairman.  Ledley still has two-and-a-half years left on his current contract so we still have a bit of time, we want to keep our best players at the club."

Stuart Pearce believes he will not become the next coach of the England national team.  "I don't think when the job is being given out I will be in the hot seat, that's for sure," said the 43-year-old.

The Football Association will not be rushed into drawing up a shortlist of candidates for the new England manager.  Martin O'Neill, the favourite for the post, is also interesting Newcastle United.  But the FA will not bring forward the 27 February board meeting, at which a process for finding and naming a new boss will be discussed.  An FA spokesman said: "Chief executive Brian Barwick has already said we will do this properly.  The meeting will be held and the process will be discussed. That is as far as it has gone."

Sunday, 12th February

Premiership: Danny Murphy made his first appearance for his new club, Tottenham Hotspur.  He is a substitute in the 1-1 draw with basement club SunderlandDarren Bent is one of the scorers as Charlton Atheltic lose at Manchester City 3-2.

Stuart Pearce says he would be willing to talk to the Football Association about becoming the new England manager.  Pearce's comments mark something of a U-turn after he previously said speculation linking him with the post was "pathetic" and "embarrassing".  Now Pearce says: "It would be absolute folly to rule myself out of any job.  And disrespectful not to talk to those who were offering me employment."

Saturday, 11th February

Premiership football:- James Beattie scores again for Everton as they overcome Blackburn Rovers with a single goal.  Stewart Downing is one of Middlesbrough's three scorers as they shock Chelsea in a 3-0 win.

Arsenè Wenger has revealed he turned down the chance to become England manager - reportedly after Kevin Keegan's departure in 2000.  Keegan's job eventually went to Sven-Göran Eriksson but Wenger believes it should have gone to an Englishman.  "I was asked to take the job. I always said the same, because the national team is not purely football.  People identify with national culture and pride, the national team, it is all linked together.  If you ask me would you prefer an English guy, I would say yes.  The national team competition is still important for people, you can see that when you look at the viewing figures on television.  And it is not down to the football level, because if England play against the Faroe Islands, it will still make more of an audience than Liverpool against Arsenal.  It is not linked with football, but with national identification."

Guus Hiddink last night ruled himself out of the England job.  He has told friends he no longer expects to be approached by the FA.

Friday, 10th February

Dave Richards, the Premier League chairman who is a member of the three-man panel that will find Eriksson's successor, says the the next England boss man should be British.  "It's time for a British boss, somebody who understands our passion, belief and commitment. There's no distinction between English and British."  Richards' statement seems to hint at former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill.

Michael Owen has handed England a boost by insisting he is on course to be fit in time for the World Cup.  Newcastle United striker Owen has been sidelined since breaking his foot at Tottenham Hotspur on New Year's Eve.  He said: "I'm not far off jogging, maybe another four or five days, maybe a week and I might start light running. I'm still on course.  I have done plenty of worrying but I can see the finishing line and I am heading for that now.  With bones you do get quick healers but once it's got a crack it takes a set time.  If I can be back playing by the end of March then I would be delighted.  When I lay on the bed at Tottenham and knew I had broken it that was the worst 20 minutes of the whole process because you wonder how bad it is."

Thursday, 9th February

Ron Greenwood has died at the age of 84 following a long illness.   Greenwood, who managed the national team between 1977 and 1982, died at his Suffolk home.  World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst said: "It would not be overstating the case to say that Ron was the single most influential figure in my career.  He opened the door to the world of modern football and I consider it a privilege to play for him."   Greenwood was West Ham United manager from 1961 to 1974 and continued as general manager at Upton Park until 1977.  During that time, the club won the FA Cup for the first time in 1964 and won the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season.  There will be a minute's silence at Upton Park before the Hammers' Premiership game against Birmingham City on Monday.  He took over as England boss after Don Revie's surprise move to the Middle East and led the team to the 1980 European Championships and The 1982 World Cup in Spain.  As a player, he had spells at Chelsea, where he played in the 1955 Championship-winning side, Bradford Park Avenue, Brentford and Fulham.  He leaves a widow, Lucy, two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

David Beckham has put any talk of international retirement on hold and wants to impress Sven-Göran Eriksson's replacement.  The 30-year-old Real Madrid star wants to become the fifth England player to make more than 100 appearances, during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.  Beckham, who has 86 caps, said: "Whatever happens, I want to show the new manager I'm worth my place.  If I'm involved, I'll go over the 100-caps mark, which would be nice."

The Football Association has denied already drawing up a shortlist of candidates to replace Sven-Göran Eriksson as England manager.  Martin O'Neill has been reported as the FA's favourite for the position with Stuart Pearce, Alan Curbishley and Guus Hiddink also being considered.  However, FA communications director Adrian Bevington said: "No shortlist has been drawn up yet.  Any speculation suggesting there is, is inaccurate."

Wednesday, 8th February

Teddy Sheringham has revealed he turned down the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur for the third time in his career in January.

Tuesday, 7th February

David Beckham believes it is all-but certain that he will sign a new contract with Real Madrid rather than return to the Premiership.  The 30-year-old's current deal at Real ends in June 2007 but he is expected to sign an extension until 2009.  "There is a 99% chance that I will stay and sign a new contract with Madrid.  We will begin to talk before the summer but there are no doubts, I will remain here."

Paul Merson has been sacked as Walsall player-manager after a poor run of results, including Saturday's 5-0 drubbing at Brentford.  Chairman Jeff Bonser said: "I felt that we had reached a point where it was in the best interests of both the club and Paul.  We have all enjoyed working with Paul and wish him every success."

Emile Heskey has admitted a Football Association charge of improper conduct after his reaction to being sent off for Birmingham City against Arsenal.   The forward received two yellow cards from Mike Riley, but refused to leave the pitch promptly and made gestures towards the referee.  He also spoke to the fourth official before manager Steve Bruce intervened.

Sunday, 5th February

Premiership football:- A Jermain Defoe brace and single Jermaine Jenas goal for Tottenham Hotspur see's off Charlton Athletic in a 3-1 win.

Sam Allardyce has admitted he would like to succeed Sven-Göran Eriksson as England manager.  Allardyce is hoping the Football Association will consider him for the post.  The 51-year-old told the Sunday Express: "People say the England job is a poisoned chalice but at this stage of my career I feel I have done my apprenticeship. I would love the opportunity to be interviewed for the position."

Luiz Felipe Scolari says his lack of English should not stop him becoming Sven-Göran Eriksson's successor.  Brazilian Scolari will leave his job as Portugal manager after this year's World Cup and he has hinted that he would be interested in the England job.  "I know if I want to take over England I need to learn the language more. It is difficult now but I know in two or three months I need to learn more and it is no problem for me.  It is not a problem for the job as the language for the players I know very well but it is important for communication with the media.  Scolari also said he would consider the Newcastle United job, along with the England vacancy, but only after his contract with Portugal expires. "After I finish my contract with Portugal I consider all offers."

Saturday, 4th February

Premiership football:- Kevin Phillips is one of the scorers in Aston Villa's 4-0 win over Middlesbrough.  Paul Konchesky scores West Ham United's second of 2 goals against Sunderland.  Emile Heskey is sent-off for Birmingham City in their loss to Arsenal.  Alan Shearer broke Jackie Milburn's all-time Newcastle United scoring record with his 201st goal and helped his side to a much-needed 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

Championship football:- Dennis Wise scores two for Coventry City in their 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.  Michael Ricketts scores for Burnley in their 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

Michael Owen hopes to have recovered from his broken foot in time for the last month of Newcastle United's season.  The 26-year-old said: "My recovery is going well.  Hopefully I'll start on the treadmill soon.  The surgeon seems happy that the pin is still in place and I want to be back for at least a month of the season.  Climbing up the table is obviously the priority and the FA Cup still gives us a shot at silverware."

Friday, 3rd February

Alan Shearer has ruled himself out of the running to replace Graeme Souness as the next Newcastle United manager.  "Let me say here and now that I do not want to be the next manager, the time is not right for me or the club.  Things are set up for someone to do well. I hope that someone is the next manager. I just know it will not be me.  That is not meant as a slight on the club. I am just thinking of what is best for Newcastle United and, right now, it would not be the best thing to have Alan Shearer as manager.  I have stood up and said that to the players and Glenn has ruled himself of being the permanent boss too.  I can only have sympathy for Graeme. He worked his socks off trying to get things right here.  But he was hampered by a horrendous injury situation that no team could have coped with."

Franz Beckenbauer believes England are the "best team in Europe" - but insists Brazil are favourites to win the World Cup in Germany this summer.  The German legend was in London to meet Prime Minister Tony Blair as part of his visits to all countries taking part in the 2006 tournament.  He said: "England's defence is excellent, and they had only one loss in qualification.   My personal top favourite is Brazil, they are full of world-class players.  For me England are still the best team in Europe. It would be great for them to win it 40 years after their last one."

UK Sport officials are keen to have the whole England squad drugs tested before this summer's World Cup in Germany.  Anti-doping chiefs test all British athletes before both summer and winter Olympics and they are keen to do the same with Sven-Göran Eriksson's squad.  UK Sport would need the agreement of the Football Association first.  "It is a discussion we'll have with the FA, because it would send a powerful message," said UK Sport's director of drug-free sport John Scott.

Owen Hargreaves is set to be sidelined for the next three weeks after undergoing a groin operation.  The 25-year-old England international has been playing through the pain barrier for a large part of Bayern Munich's season and the club have finally decided to allow him to go under the surgeon's knife in order to rectify the problem.  Hargreaves will definitely miss the next three Bundesliga matches, but is hoping he will have recovered in time for Bayern's Champions League second round first leg clash with AC Milan on February 21.

Thursday, 2nd February

The Football Association has appointed a three-man team to find the next England coach.  FA chief executive Brian Barwick, international committee chairman Noel White and Premier League chairman Dave Richards will form the select group.  The trio will begin their discussions next week and will report to FA chairman Geoff Thompson at the next board meeting on 27 February.  The FA said in a statement: "At an FA board meeting, discussions took place on the recruitment process for appointing the next England head coach.  It was agreed at the meeting that chief executive Brian Barwick would meet international committee chairman Noel White and vice-chairman Dave Richards next week to commence this process."  The FA's director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, is expected to act as an adviser.

Sol Campbell will not play for Arsenal in Saturday's match at Birmingham City, manager Arsenè Wenger has revealed. Wenger said that Campbell was in a bad "mental shape" and he did not train today.  Campbell's absence deepens Arsenal's problems at the back, with eight defenders now unavailable.

Alan Shearer has been installed as Newcastle United's caretaker assistant manager to Glenn Roeder, following the dismissal today of Graeme Souness.  Former England striker Shearer has made no secret of his desire to one day take over as Newcastle boss.

Mark Wright has launched a legal action against Peterborough United, following his sacking on Tuesday.  Wright, 42, is suing the League Two club for breach of contract and the harm caused to his reputation.  He was dismissed for gross misconduct after failing to attend a disciplinary hearing, but told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph: "I am deeply hurt.  What has happened is a scandal and I have to protect my reputation which is why we're prepared to go to court.  I have now heard certain things through my solicitor about what I have supposedly said and done, and I categorically refute all of the accusations.  I never wanted to do anything but manage Peterborough United and I still believe I was the right man for the job.  I built a good side, one which could have been top, or at least in the automatic promotion places, with a bit more luck.  The players I brought to the club signed because of me so I feel sorry for them that I had to leave. I still want those players to do well and to achieve everything in football they want to achieve.  I'm a players' manager. I don't do all the other stuff behind the scenes that managers are expected to do these days, but I was good at my job, as seventh place would suggest."

Wednesday, 1st February

Premiership drama:- Rio Ferdinand is sent off following two yellow cards as Manchester United lose at Blackburn Rovers by 4 goals to 3.  Steven Gerrard scores the single Liverpool goal in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham City, Robbie Fowler had a goal disallowed.  Andrew Cole and Darius Vassell score for Manchester City in their 3-0 win over Newcastle United.

Sol Campbell left Highbury at half-time after being substituted during the 3-2 defeat by West Ham United - but Arsenal boss Arsenè Wenger did not condemn the move.  The 31-year-old Gunners defender was at fault during the build-up to the Hammers' first two goals on Wednesday.  Wenger said: "You always want your players to stay but there are exceptional circumstances where you can understand what he did.  He did not do it meaning disrespect to the club or to the team."

Frank Lampard has been voted England Player of the Year for 2005 in a fans' poll by the Football Association.  Lampard took 29% of the vote on the FA's website with Steven Gerrard in second with 18% and Wayne Rooney third with 16%.  Sven-Göran Eriksson said: "He is one of the most improved players I've seen in the last few years.  He gets better and better. He has been brilliant for us in 2005."

The Football Association will take the first steps in appointing a successor to Sven-Göran Eriksson tomorrow.  An FA group of four or five people, likely to be headed by chief executive Brian Barwick, will be chosen with the brief of finding the next England boss.  The group, reporting to FA chairman Geoff Thompson, will not be announcing a shortlist of potential managers - or whether the new man will be English.  Other members likely to be involved in the sub-group are international committee chairman Noel White and his vice-chairman on that committee Dave Richards, who is also the chairman of the Premier League.  There could also be space for Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, who was instrumental in securing Eriksson when the Swede was appointed in 2000.  The FA's director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, is expected to act as an adviser.

Sven-Göran Eriksson has reportedly hinted that Guus Hiddink will be the next England manager.  Eriksson told diners in a Stockholm restaurant that Hiddink will succeed him when he leaves after the World Cup.  When asked by a couple, Eriksson reportedly said: "It will be Hiddink, and good luck to him."  Eriksson was back in his native Sweden to receive an award from King Carl Gustav for his contribution to sport.
