Diary

Friday, 27 August 2010 - Young Boys defender Scott Sutter, a dual British-Swiss national, received his first call up for Switzerland's squad to face Australia and England next month.  Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld included the 24-year-old in his squad of 21 for the friendly and then the opening Euro 2012 qualifier on the strength of his showing for the Bernese side against Tottenham, the team he supported as a boy, in their Champions League qualifiers.  Sutter, who grew up in London, said he was overjoyed.  Sutter also owed his selection to the absence of Stuttgart's Philipp Degen, who is ill with an infection.  Switzerland's top goalscorer, Alexander Frei, returns to the squad after injury, along with fellow Basel player Marco Streller.

Tuesday, 31 August 2010 - Hakan Yakin will not play any part in their upcoming matches against England and Australia due to a thigh injury.  The 33-year-old sustained the knock during a league match for his club Lucerne on Sunday and has been declared unfit to play by the Swiss football federation. He will not be available for their friendly against Australia or the start of their European Championship qualifying campaign, when they face the Three Lions in Basle. Yakin is one of the Swiss' most experienced campaigners with 84 appearances and a mainstay in the side over the past 10 years, as well as one of the few creative players in their side.  FC Zürich's Xavier Margairaz has been called up to replace the veteran Swiss international.

Friday, 3 September 2010 - A dismal draw against Australia saw the Swiss goal record to four in ten matches.  Alexander Frei missed a penalty and Pirmin Schwelger received lengthy treatment on an ankle injury that leaves him in doubt for their opening Euro qualifying campaign against England.

Saturday, 4 September 2010 - Tranquillo Barnetta will definitely miss the match against England, after missing the match against Australia on Tuesday night, due to a virus.  Hitzfeld, in consultation with the team doctor, Roland Great, has decided against using Barnetta.  Instead, he has decided to call on the services of Sampdoria's Marco Padalino as a precaution.
