Diary

Thursday, 13 November 2008 - Experienced midfielder Torsten Frings has been left out of the 20-man German squad to face England in Wednesday's friendly.  The 31-year-old recently resolved a dispute with coach Joachim Löw but has not been selected for the match at Berlin's Olympic Stadium.  Skipper Michael Ballack is injured and Philipp Lahm, Clemens Fritz, Marcell Jansen and Christian Pander are also out so Löw will blood new faces.  Marvin Compper, Tobias Weis and Marcel Schaefer earn their first call-ups.

The German football federation (DFB) said in a statement that Löw and Frings had agreed on the player's omission ahead of the squad announcement.  Chelsea midfielder Ballack, who also apologised to Löw after expressing his own disappointment at the treatment of Frings, will miss the match as he is still recovering from a foot operation.  Of the potential debutants who have been drafted in, Löw said: "We want to use the last game of the year to again try out one or two things and get some impressions for next year."  Löw also confirmed his decision not to recall former German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann following speculation that the 39-year-old could have made a farewell appearance during the match against England.  The Germany coach said last week the friendly was too important as a means of giving international match practice to Lehmann's young successors.

Tuesday, 18 November 2008 - Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has emerged as a slight injury doubt for Germany.
