and including Germany's match against Hungary on 15 August 2001. Diary
Thursday, 23 August 2001 -
Germany manager Rudi Völler named a 21-man squad to face England on Saturday,
1 September at Munich's Olympiastadion in a World Cup 2002 preliminary match
that is critical for both sides.
 Tuesday, 28 August 2001
  - Mehmet Scholl, the main creative force in Germany's midfield, withdrew from
the squad because of an inflamed tendon in his foot.  The same problem
kept him out of the German side that beat Hungary in a friendly in Budapest on
15 August and the Bayern München team that lost to Liverpool in the UEFA Super
Cup in Monaco on 24 August.
 Struggling centre-forward Oliver Bierhoff moved
from AC Milan to AS Monaco.  Bierhoff had lost his starting place in both
the Milan and German national sides.  He recently offered to resign as
Germany's captain, and retired German defender Lothar Mathaus suggested he
retire from international play before next year's World Cup final tournament.
Bierhoff, who ended a scoring drought with a goal scored as a substitute in
Germany's 15 August victory against Hungary, is much more likely to regain a
starting place with Monaco.  Rudi Völler has said only players who
regularly start for their club sides will be named to Germany's squad for next
year's World Cup final tournament.
