Match Report

[To come.]

For once heat and altitude worked in England's favour.  The West German squad arrived in México City only two days before their meeting with England and had insufficient time to acclimatize to the 8,000-foot altitude and temperatures approaching 100° F accompanied by severe smog.  England, on the other hand, had arrived more than a week before and had two matches at Azteca stadium against Italy and México under their belt already.

Shilton made the only penalty kick save of his career, against Andreas Brehme, who got his revenge at the World Cup in 1990.

Source Notes

[To come.]

Both Mike Payne, in England: The Complete Post-War Record, p. 263 (1993), and the Deutscher Fussball-Bund [German football association] website have the attendance at England's match with West Germany as 8,000, but Ron Hockings & Keir Radnedge, in Nations of Europe, vol. 1, p. 198 (1993), put it at 10,000.
