Diary

Manager Bobby Robson selected a 22-man squad for the four-match "summer tour" to Mexico and the U.S.A.  The first three matches of the tour, at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City against Italy, Mexico and West Germany, were part of two triangular tournaments, with the game against Mexico figuring in both. Following these mini-tournaments, the squad travelled north to Los Angeles, where they met the U.S.A. in a friendly match.
The Football Association brochure for the tour listed Peter Davenport, Paul Mariner and Steve Williams in the squad, but apparently they withdrew and were replaced by three players who did not appear in the brochure's squad list but who played on the tour, Kerry Dixon, Paul Bracewell and Peter Reid.  The three squad members based in Italy, Trevor Francis, Mark Hateley and Ray Wilkins, returned to their clubs sides to meet club commitments before the tour was completed and were not available for the tour's last two matches against West Germany and the U.S.A.
