Diary

Friday, 24 February 1984 - Brazil will play friendly matches against England and Uruguay to mark the 70th anniversary of the CBF, Dilson Guedes confirmed today. England, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina and the Netherlands were originally invited to compete with the Brazilians in a six-nation tournament to celebrate the anniversary. But the event was scrapped after pressure from FIFA because it clashed with the UEFA European Championship Finals.

Monday, 4 June 1984 - The most inexperienced England squad has flown from Heathrow on Wednesday for their tour of South America. For a team with only three wins to its credit in eight games this season, it is a frightening prospect. The loss of so many senior internationals for a variety of reasons means Bobby Robson must include five uncapped players. Youngsters such as Mark Hateley, Clive Allen and Gary Stevens have been hurried forward while still learning their trade, and honest, time-served professionals with little claim to greatness such as Steve Hunt, David Armstrong and Simon Stainrod suddenly find themselves preparing to face world-class opposition.
