Source Notes

Consistent with the practice prevailing until the end of the 20th century, the Deutscher Fußball-Verband, the football association of the German Democratic Republic, popularly known as East Germany, recognised Olympic Games qualifying and final tournament matches played by its senior side against the senior sides of other nations as constituting official internationals.  But in 1999, FIFA, in consultation with the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), retroactively removed official status from all  Olympic Games matches played since 1950.  We have questioned this retroactive desanctification of matches elsewhere.  Our team and player records, like those of most reputable sources, reflect matches deemed official under the accepted practice of the time at which they were played.
