Notes
Under FIFA rules for the competition,
players who earn a second yellow card caution are suspended for the next
match. Players who receive a red card expulsion--either for
incurring two yellow card cautions in the same match or for a severe
foul or other serious breach of fair play--are also automatically
suspended for the next match and, depending on the nature of their
offense, may be suspended for more than one match.
FIFA's match summaries state that Rudi Vata received
yellow cards in the Finland and Greece matches, and if that were
the case, he should have been suspended for the next match,
against Germany. But he played against Germany and, indeed, picked up
another yellow card, which resulted in his suspension for the next
match, against England. Media reports stated that the
yellow card Rudi Vata received in the Germany match was his second
in the competition. According to Kicker Online, a reliable
source, the player who received a caution in the Greece match was
Fatmir Vata, not Rudi Vata, and we have departed from the FIFA
records in this respect because they are inaccurate.
FIFA's World Cup 2002 Organising
Committee decided on 28 November 2001 that yellow card cautions incurred in the preliminary competition
for which a
suspension had not been served would not be carried over to the final
tournament, but that any unserved match suspensions for red card
expulsions during the preliminary competition would be carried over.
The decision saved Paul Scholes from a
suspension for the first match of the final tournament because he had
incurred his second yellow card of the preliminary competition in
England's last match of the preliminary competition, against
Greece. It also erased single yellow card cautions incurred by five
England players during the preliminary competition--Steve McManaman,
Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard.
