FIFA's World Cup 2002 Organising
Committee decided on 28 November 2001 that yellow card cautions
incurred in the preliminary competition
for which a
suspension had not been served would not be carried over to the final
tournament, but that any unserved match suspensions for red card
expulsions during the preliminary competition would be carried over.
The decision saved Paul Scholes from a
suspension for the first match of the final tournament because he had
incurred his second yellow card of the preliminary competition in
England's last match, against
Greece. It also erased single yellow card cautions incurred by five
England players
during the preliminary
competition--Steve McManaman,
Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard.
