squad members, Frank Lampard and Darius Vassell had birthdays during
England's participation in the tournament.

Notes
Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson named a 24-man squad on May
17, 2004 for preparatory friendly matches at The City of Manchester Stadium against
Japan on June 1 and Iceland on June 4.
Jermain Defoe was
called up on stand-by for the European Championship squad, but also drafted in
to the FA Summer Tournament squad. Other players on European
Championship squad stand-by are Chelsea's Scott Parker, Leeds United's Alan
Smith, Birmingham City's Matthew Upson and Everton's reserve goalkeeper,
Richard Wright. Gareth Southgate of Middlesbrough was also included as a
standby, but he is also recovering from a long-term injury and is unexpected
to be fit in time.
Notable exclusions
from the squad are return-to-form defenders, Wesley Brown of Manchester United
and Ugo Ehiogu, of Middlesbrough. Clubless Danny Mills and Southampton's
striker James Beattie are also excluded.
The form of Everton's veteran
goalkeeper, Nigel Martyn is also noted. He turns down to the opportunity
to be considered for a shock recall. Eriksson instaed calls on his
clubmate Richard Wright as the reserve goalkeeper.
Survivors from the
2000 European Championship squad include the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil,
Sol Campbell, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard and
Emile Heskey. Gareth Southgate and Richard Wright are demoted to the
reserves list.
Emile Heskey is
transferred from Liverpool to Birmingham City on the morning following the
squad announcement. Alan Smith, an England standby, is transferred from
Leeds United to Manchester United on 26 May 2004.
